Set across 13.5 hectares, these beautiful cool-climate gardens have been growing since opening in 2013.

A young and developing garden, the Southern Highlands are recognised for their seasonal interest.

Take in the fresh air and open spaces, from vibrant blooms in spring and summer, to the rich colours of autumn and striking bark textures and winter flowers in the cooler months.

Be inspired by plantings as you stroll through the gardens, with friendly and informative volunteer guides.

Refunds for walking tours will be issued for cancellations made up to 24 hours before the scheduled date.

Proudly showcasing four nationally recognised plant collections, officially recorded on the National Plant Collections Register.

These include 23 varieties of Betula (Birch), 21 types of Buxus (Boxwood), as well as collections of Dwarf Cornus (Dogwood) and Narcissus (Tony Davis Daffodils).

As well as re-establishing the endangered ecological community that would have originally been growing on this site, the Southern Highlands Shale Woodland.

Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens are created by the community, for the community. A not-for-profit charitable organisation, responsible for raising its own funds to establish and operate the gardens.

A haven for lovers of history and the arts only a short scenic drive away from Sydney!! My partner and I decided on a whim to make a day trip to Bowral and fortunately secured tickets the morning of the tour. I would say it's worth every cent to secure a membership, as that money will go to fund the continual conservation of these beautiful properties. I believe you'll have access to ~180 buildings across Australia, for free with the membership. The staff are equally as lovely as the place. Sue, the duty manager, was warm and welcoming from the moment we arrived. I knew it would be a good idea to join the trust as she made it feel like such a safe, nurturing community to be apart of. Our tour was led by a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable Jan. It's approximately 1.5-2 hours of an informative tour. Emphasis on the fact that it is NOT a self-led tour. In order to preserve what is an ode to Mr Fairfax's life and the artists that surrounded him, it makes complete sense. Please keep in mind that these places operate on the selflessness and dedication of volunteers, and that whilst the National Trust makes historical architecture accessible, they simultaneously have the responsibility to maintain the condition of these places. That means there are strict cut offs to capacity and - quite understandably, pets are not allowed on the property. It sucks to see the hard work of the volunteers and foundation marred by reviews written by people who have no respect or understanding of conservation and its importance. Once the tour is done there is also the gardens surrounding that is beautiful for a stroll around. From beautiful manicured hedges to a pool house (not swimmable) or chicken coop… We could have spent all day here.
