Alpine Access can take you beyond the resorts to ride untracked lines in the backcountry. They offer backcountry intro tours and avalanche skills training (AST1).

An AST 1 course is a must if you venture out of bounds, off the trails or into the backcountry. Alpine Access provides Avalanche Canada AST1 training, designed for the recreational backcountry skier/snowboarder. You will learn to recognise avalanche terrain, reduce avalanche risk and perform companion rescue, as well as backcountry touring skills, technique and etiquette.

Backcountry Introductory Tour

For those wanting to be guided on their first backcountry experience, Alpine Access offer introductory days. The focus is on making it as enjoyable and informative as possible, and the day will be tailored to your ability, fitness and what you want to get out of it. You will learn about touring equipment and technique, route selection, safe travel in the backcountry, and snowcraft skills. They will assist you with organisation of equipment for the tour.

AST1 Avalanche Skills Training

AST1 is a two day course – 1 day in the classroom, and 1 day out in the backcountry. You will learn: -avalanche formation and release -identify avalanche terrain -the basics of trip planning -optimal use of tools and resources like the avalanche forecasts to mitigate your avalanche risk -use appropriate travel techniques in avalanche terrain -companion rescue using beacon, shovel, probe. We also incorporate into the field day of our course an emphasis on backcountry touring technique, safe touring in the Australian backcountry and touring etiquette.
