Fishing is a popular pastime around Oberon, which can be enjoyed for most of the year.
Lake Oberon is regularly stocked with Rainbow Trout and Golden Perch fingerlings. Lake Oberon supplies drinking water so swimming, camping and lighting of fires beside the lake are prohibited. Visitors may walk around the foreshore if they keep close to the water’s edge. Access to many of the streams in the area may be through private property.
Lake Oberon is open to anglers all year round, but the streams are subject to Freshwater Fishing Regulations. The season for stream fishing opens at the start of the October long weekend and closes at the end of the June long weekend. All anglers must have a Freshwater Fishing Licence.
Lake Oberon is ideal for canoes, kayaks and small fishing or sailing dinghies which are electric powered as Lake Oberon is open to non-powered boating only. As Lake Oberon sits 1068 metres above sea level, it's classed as alpine waters and life jackets must be worn at all times.
There are a number of access points around the lake, including the recently upgraded area called The Reef, vehicle and trailer boat access to the water’s edge.
Oberon Dam is a tranquil and well-maintained destination, offering a peaceful retreat amid the scenic landscapes of the Central Tablelands of New South Wales (see photos). Surrounded by bushland and open countryside, the dam provides a calm setting ideal for picnics, short walks, and quiet relaxation specially on a sunny day. The open space around the water allows for unobstructed views, making it particularly appealing for photography and nature appreciation. With basic facilities, ample parking, and a generally uncrowded atmosphere, Oberon Dam is well suited for visitors seeking a simple, unspoilt outdoor experience away from busy tourist hubs.
A beautiful spot for spending your time. It is a bit secluded but once you are here the vibe is so great. The sunset views across the dam are phenomenal. Picnic tables and barbeques are set up and you can easily spend the whole day here. Make sure you exit before the stated times as gates close overnight.
Nice place for a picnic and fishing. Unfortunately, when we visited the water level was low, so we couldn’t see the overflow spill.
Beautiful spot coming here for the wall waterfall in summer and sunset 🌇
Quaint little park and picnic area beside the dam. There is a toilet block. There is a hill to climb to get up to the dam, but a walk up the roadway is a gentler ascent. The dam itself is plain but picturesque.
