Immerse yourself in the surreal beauty of Cactus Country, a unique outdoor attraction that transports you straight to the deserts of Mexico, right in the heart of Victoria, Australia. This expansive cactus garden, the largest in Australia, spans nearly five hectares and is home to over 10,000 cacti and succulents from around the globe.
Located in Strathmerton, three hours north of Melbourne, Cactus Country offers a captivating blend of diverse landscapes under vast blue skies. Navigate through eight themed trails such as The Andes Walk, The Valley of the Giants, and The Arizona Walk, each filled with an array of prickly residents from countries like Mexico, Argentina, and the USA.
Photography enthusiasts will find endless inspiration in the garden's unique shapes and vibrant blooms, while foodies can enjoy authentic Mexican flavours at the on-site restaurant. Try their cactus cake made from Peruvian apple, the fruit of the cereus, or kick back with a margarita or a cold Mexican watermelon soda in the sunny adobe courtyard.
Cactus Country is a pet-friendly destination, so feel free to bring along your furry friends (on a lead, of course). And before you leave, don't forget to pick up a few cacti from their nursery as a perfect memento of your visit.

Takes about 3 hours one way from Melbourne and 50 mins to 1 hour to tour the garden. Lovely place and owners. Loved seeing all the different varieties of cacti - garden has a cute Mexican theme throughout. Super educational and fun for kids. ☺️ Enjoyed the cactus ice-cream at the cafe too and wasn't dull in taste! Would love to try their tacos and other food products some day. ♥️ Overall, definitely worth a visit, especially if you're passing by. 🌵🏜️🤠🏵️🍦
If you’re a cactus enthusiast or simply enjoy plants in general, this is a must-go destination. The quantity and size of the many varieties of cacti and cacti-related plants are astounding. I’ve enjoyed this visit, well worth the drive from Melbourne. The cafe serves Mexican food and drinks. There is also a nursery where you can purchase cacti and succulent. Service is friendly and prompt.
On November 1st 2025 my now husband and I said "I do". Cactus country will always hold a special place in my heart. For those who are interested in weddings/ elopements or just wanting to get married somewhere unique and different this is the place to do it. From the initial consultation with Julie (owner) to the final result, I couldn't have asked for a better team. Sophie my amazing coordinator, my gosh was she a firecracker! Nothing was too hard of an ask, and she did everything with ease and no complaints. I had roughly 45-50 guests and everything went so perfect. I cannot recommend this place even if it's just for a short visit, it's nothing less of magical. Thank you for allowing my wedding day to be effortless, beautiful and amazing. Words truly can't describe how much I appreciate all involved in making this such a wonderful day.
Entry $25 seems pricey for what you get. Its a large plot of land filled with cacti and the odd tacky decoration. I thought I could maybe get some good aerial shots but staff will chase you down if you try fly a drone without a booking
While camping in Bearii, we discovered this amazing spot to visit. We had a great time exploring the area and seeing so many different varieties of cacti all in one place. Plus, it’s pet-friendly! Before you leave, make sure to try the cactus ice cream and cake at the charming little café—they also offer a variety of food and drinks.
