The park is a renowned destination for birdwatchers worldwide, with species including the threatened Superb Parrot, Azure and Sacred Kingfishers, Rainbow Bee-eater, White-bellied Sea-Eagle, and large flocks of Australian Pelicans. Kangaroos, koalas, and other native wildlife are also commonly seen along the riverbanks.

Our Year 7 students had a highly valuable and engaging experience during our visit to Dharanya Cultural Centre. The program was well organised, culturally respectful, and perfectly suited to the age group. The smoking ceremony was a meaningful way to begin the day, providing students with a powerful introduction to Aboriginal cultural practices and traditions. The staff and Elders created a welcoming and inclusive environment, allowing students to feel comfortable asking questions and participating. All three activities were hands-on and educational. Students particularly enjoyed learning Yorta Yorta animal words, which supported language awareness and cultural understanding. The weaving activity using raffia was a highlight, teaching patience, concentration, and an appreciation for traditional craftsmanship. The guided walk through the Barmah woodland was both informative and enjoyable, helping students understand the importance of Country, floodplains, and significant sites such as canoe trees. The opportunity to try boomerang throwing added an element of fun while reinforcing cultural learning. The facilitators were knowledgeable, supportive, and excellent with students. Their ability to share stories and explain cultural concepts in an accessible way greatly enhanced the learning experience. Overall, the excursion strongly supported our curriculum goals in Indigenous Studies and Humanities and provided students with authentic, memorable learning outside the classroom. We would highly recommend Dharanya Cultural Centre to other schools and would welcome the opportunity to visit again .
