Located approximately 18 kilometres from Cheshunt, Lake William Hovell is a scenic and popular recreational destination set among the rolling landscapes of the King Valley.
This picturesque lake offers a range of outdoor activities, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing day out. Visitors can enjoy picnicking and barbecuing in well-maintained areas, as well as fishing, canoeing and walking along the shoreline. The lake is home to a variety of fish species, including trout, redfin and the protected Macquarie perch, an endangered native species.
Constructed in 1971, Lake William Hovell was built to store water from the King River for downstream irrigation. The reserve has been open to the public for decades and is managed to balance recreation with its important role as an irrigation storage.
Unique boating regulations help preserve the lake's peaceful atmosphere, with vessel speeds limited to eight kilometres per hour and engine power restricted. Camping is not permitted within the reserve, although much of the western shoreline is easily accessible and well maintained for visitors.
Water levels can vary significantly throughout the year, often dropping in summer and refilling over winter. These seasonal changes make the cooler months, particularly winter, an ideal time for trout fishing.
The lake is gorgeous and ideal for swimming, boating and rowing. Can enjoy fishing as well. Worth visiting. Changing rooms are also available.
Lovely spot for swim or fish with the family. Picnic tables and toilets are available. There is not a lot of shade though.
Nice place for a picnic, swimming, fishing, paddling. Public toilet clean. No phone reception
Beautiful spot in the world... bring a chair a picnic and forget the troubles of the world. Added bonus... no reception to ensure the serenity.
Lake William Hovell is a great place for a visit, whether fishing or for a relaxing picnic. Boat ramp is a good ramp except for when the lake is full, as the last section has no slope to it and makes it hard to launch a boat without drowning your car.
