Nimons Bridge was Victoria's fourth-largest timber trestle bridge when built and is the third-tallest surviving example. It is also the second-largest composite bridge combining traditional timber piers with RSJ spans and a timber deck. The bridge is the most visually spectacular timber-trestle bridge in Western Victoria and among the most spectacular timber-trestle rail bridges surviving anywhere in Victoria. It is part of the Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail.
Nimons Bridge near Newtown is a real highlight along this section of the rail trail. The old timber‑trestle railway bridge is impressive up close, with its long span and layered beams giving you a sense of how much history still sits in the landscape. It’s a great spot to pause whether you’re on a walk or riding your bike, and the gentle curves of the trail make the approach feel relaxed and scenic. The mix of heritage engineering and open countryside makes this one of the most memorable stops on the route.
Great to see these old pieces of history being retained and utilised. I was riding the Smythesdale to Linton section of the Ballarat to Skipton rail trail and this bridge is a nice halfway point between the two towns. Beautiful old bridge. Longest trestle bridge and third tallest in Victoria.
Pretty cool bridge; not something you'd drive a long way to see - but I suspect this rail trail is an excellent bike ride. The track is in excellent condition. Access via dirt road, any car could probably do it but would not recommend taking a caravan in.
Very easy to find and walk around. The parking area is a little small but probably doesn't get that busy, and is only a few hundred meters from the bridge. The left hand path from the parking area takes you over the bridge, whilst the right hand one takes you under it; and both paths come together on the other side of the bridge. There are picnic benches dotted around the area, as well as information panels. The top of the bridge gives up some stunning views of the surrounding countryside. So well worth a visit if the structure intrigues you, and / or you want a pleasant walk along a rail trail.
This is a lovely walk which feels safe. It’s mostly level depending on whether you walk down to see the bridge from below - the best view in my opinion. There are a couple of information shelters which are quite comprehensive but would also provide shelter in the event of sudden rain. It’s part of the Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail and there is plenty of room for both cyclists and walkers. Lovely views!
