Most locals know the old barn behind the Wollombi General Store. Over the years, it's been used for all sorts of things, but it's now starting a new chapter.
The space has been transformed into the Artisans Collective, a working hub for local makers and craftspeople from across the valley. Rather than simply being a place where finished products sit on shelves, the barn will be a place where work actually happens. Painters, textile artists, jewellers, leather workers and other artisans will use the space as studios, creating their work on site, while visitors can see the process up close.
The aim of the collective is to celebrate and support the creative talent that already exists within the valley. By bringing a group of artisans together in one shared space, the barn becomes both a working studio and a place where visitors can discover locally made work and connect directly with the people behind it.
Workshops will also be held in the barn, giving locals and visitors the chance to learn directly from the artisans themselves. You can book your workshop via the Wollombi General Store website.
Save the date, as the first Saturday of every month will be the Artisan Collective market. Come join them in the garden of the Wollombi General Store and Artisan Collective.
21/3/26 The restaurant across the road was closed unexpectedly, so we decided on this after seeing the good reviews. What a gem! The food was lovely, especially the lasagna mentioned by others and the new ice cream dessert made on the spot. You have to try it!!
The general store has had a Reno and the new owners have transformed this historic store into a charming cafe and restaurant. The food is excellent and very reasonably priced. They have done a fantastic job of keeping the historic feel and adding some great comforts. They even have a gelato stand inside. Well Worth checking out.
On a recent trip to Australia we stopped in Wollombi on our way up to Hunter Valley. Can I say I’m really glad we did. We stopped for a light bite to eat at the General Store and the food was amazing. The cheese and prosciutto toastie was an absolute game changer for me. Prosciutto on the outside of the toastie!! Amazing. This is hands down the best toastie I have ever had in UK, Europe or anywhere else. I advise anyone near here to pop in and try these. The only downside is I will probably have to wait another 2 years to try another one
Wollombi is a small tourist stop with a handful of interesting shops, and pricing reflects the tourist type location. Coffee was very good, but service was slow, I had to interrupt staff walking past the counter to be served. (maybe just a one off experience). Worth stopping for coffee, cake, or ice cream, as long as you’re not in a rush.
Recommended by the lovely people at Where Pigs Fly to check this place out, and it was indeed a gem! Beautifully presented store, super impressed with the staff. The lovely young lady who served us was so helpful - she came around the counter and asked whether we wanted sweet or savoury, and then went out of her way to talk through the options and help us decide. Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. The food was tasty, the veggie toastie was very satisfying.
