Just 85 kilometres west of Toowoomba along the Warrego Way, Dalby offers a genuine taste of country life and the rich stories of the Western Downs. Visitors are encouraged to slow down, chat with locals, and explore the history that gives the town its welcoming character.
Follow the Dalby Heritage Trail to discover many of the town's historic buildings, including St Joseph's Catholic Church built in 1921, the former police station from the mid 1860s, the Art Centre housed in the old bath house, and Mary's Commercial Hotel established in 1885 and one of the region's most iconic pubs.
Dalby's history continues at Pioneer Park Museum, where displays feature working farm machinery from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, early fashions, household memorabilia, and an extensive collection of minerals and fossils. A standout item is a handwritten letter by Ned Kelly requesting permission for his mother to visit him in prison.
For outdoor enjoyment, the Myall Creek Parklands Walkway is popular with bird watchers and includes interpretive plaques marking sites of historical significance. Thomas Jack Park on the edge of town offers a relaxed picnic setting and a children's adventure playground.
For an authentic rural experience, visit the Dalby Regional Sale Yards on a Wednesday morning. One of Queensland's largest one day cattle sales, it delivers lively local atmosphere with sales beginning at 7.30am.
Dalby is also a convenient base for exploring the nearby Bunya Mountains and Lake Broadwater Conservation Park, home to the only natural lake on the Darling Downs and surrounded by cypress and brigalow country.
Annual highlights include the Dalby Show in April, Dalby Picnic Races in May, the Delicious and DeLIGHTful Festival in August, and Australia's largest Stock Horse Sale and Campdraft held in early December.
