Ipswich City Council Notice: Upgrade works are underway at Ipswich Nature Centre, with some temporary changes to trail access and animal enclosures.
For 80 years, locals and visitors have been able to see animals on this site, and the 21st century version is up there with the best of wildlife refuges. To make the cute and furry animals feel as at home as possible, there are lush landscaped gardens and exhibits that have been created to represent local bushland and flora communities.
A handsome rotunda built in 1891 is the entrance to the Centre, a gold coin donation is asked at the entry to help with the upkeep of the animals. From there, you stroll on shady walkways and enjoy the cute native residents including wombats, wallabies, emus, quolls, and a nocturnal bilby exhibit. A vibrant rainforest bird aviary is alive with colour and sound, and youngsters will have a ball in the barn that has chickens, goats and other farmyard friends.
Open Tuesday to Sunday (daily during school holidays), and near the Japanese-themed Nerima Gardens within Queens Park, the Ipswich Nature Centre is perfect family-friendly fun.
Entry conditions apply for the full terms of entry, visit the website.

Absolutely fantastic! I went with my camera and had many amazing photographic opportunities! I don't even think I saw the whole space! Beautiful gardens and a lovely, tranquil place to visit. I'll be back! Oh! And really! All those negative review for a facility that has a gold coin donation. Not cool! Not cool at all.
This is a family friendly animal sanctuary with only a gold coin donation! Unlike other commercial zoo that will break your bank. It’s not big but we found rare animals like the quoll and Kilby! They also have a bird sanctuary with different kinds of species, really beautiful! It’s worth checking out especially during the school holidays break.
Gold coin donation entry beautifully kept reserve with dingo, bilby, quoll, eagle, peacock, kangaroos, snakes, a variety of birds. Parking is freely available and the green spaces are well looked after. Can get a little muddy when wet in the aviary but the rest is on a boardwalk which is great! Was very nice to see a lot of animals upclose. Great little park!
Beautifully kept reserve, with several upgrades occurring at the time of this review, albeit still open. Gold coin donation, but otherwise free, with several native Australian animals. Generally would take less than an hour to navigate the nature centre, with parking free at the adjacent road.
For a free 'mini' zoo, this place is 👍👏✨️ Divided into some areas (barn, aviary, etc), the nature centre is a place when you can bring your children to see some animals, even you can meet the great gatsby🐇🐭🦘. It also has a small amphitheatre inside the centre. Do not forget to bring a $1 donation coin version. They only accept that. You have the free entry but it would be nice if we can left some money (i forgot to bring my coin).
