Experience one of Australia's most spectacular rail journeys aboard Kuranda Scenic Railway. Travel through the heart of Din Din (Barron Gorge) National Park and discover the ancient tropical rainforest of Australia's Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.
Immerse yourself in the journey where breathtaking scenery, towering waterfalls and deep ravines unfold. Rising from sea level to 327 metres, the train winds its way through 15 hand-made tunnels and over 55 bridges to the mountain village of Ngunbay (Kuranda), meaning 'place of the platypus'.
This heritage-listed railway line, which opened in 1891, is an engineering feat that has stood the test of time. Learn more about the cultural significance, history and points of interest with audio commentary on the train or via the app (audio and text).
This immersive journey takes approximately two hours one way. You can depart from Cairns, Freshwater or Kuranda railway stations. To enhance your experience, complement your railway adventure with one of our Kuranda day tour packages.
Definatly a thing to do once, i wouldnt do it again, train is so slow all the way up, depending who your allocated seat is next to, can be a very long ride up 🙄. Some interesting history how the train track was built and why etc. Some beautiful views to see along the way. Will be up to the individual. But we did train up skyrail down, I would only do skyrail up and down now, much quicker and much more beautiful.
Wonderful experience. Took the Skyrail up at 09:45. Then the Kuranda Scenic Railway back at 15:00. In Kuranda, there was enough time for the Koala, Butterfly and Bird Sanctuaries (buy all three tickets at once for a discount). Excellent local markets and food choices. Recommend a scenic river walk before the train departs.
Scenic rail route built early 1900s. Recommend reserving tickets in advance. Views are stunning, even though today was foggy. Pictures don’t represent well enough
Very nice experience. Even better if you go after heavy rainfall. Baron falls was roaring. We even saw rainbow over Baron falls, which is rare. The food served on gold class ticket was very tasty. Just tidbits but tasty. Make sure you go via train and come back via skyrail. Make sure to stop and get down at both skyrail stop. And upgrade to diamond ticket for skyrail to get the glass bottom carriage. P:S: its really high. Also try to catch the free ranger guided boardwalk tour on the way back via skyrail.
Highly recommend doing this! As a person who isn’t big on trains or scenic views, I was pleasantly suprised how nice this journey was. Approximately an hour and a half journey to the top with really good views along the way. They even stop at one point for all passengers to get out to take photos and then get back on. We were unlucky with the weather as it rained that day but honestly, it was still very enjoyable.
