Find yourself rocking, rolling, and leaning into an abundance of gentle curves as the iconic steam train travels through the picturesque small town of Dagun on the journey to the historical town of Amamoor. This is a train trip you would have never experienced before!
Guests can design their own memorable experience on the Mary Valley Rattler. Choose your train journey from their fleet of heritage steam and diesel locomotives, or railmotors on the Classic Rattler Run, Ride with the Driver or Silver Bullet High Tea.
Then, continue your romance of the railway, upgrading your ride with a VIP experience package designed to suit the whole family – even your fur-friends are welcome to enjoy a magical day with Mary Valley Rattler.

VIP Lounge Experience
Upgrade your journey aboard the Mary Valley Rattler with the VIP Lounge Experience, a premium way to enjoy one of Queensland's most iconic heritage rail journeys near the Sunshine Coast and Gympie. Departing from the historic Gympie Station, this first-class experience includes priority boarding and reserved seating in the exclusive VIP Lounge carriage. Travel in comfort on a scenic 40km return journey through the picturesque Mary Valley, passing rolling farmland, forests and charming country towns. During the journey, enjoy a locally sourced tasting plate served onboard by your personal carriage host, along with engaging commentary about the railway and surrounding region. Bar facilities are also available throughout the trip. At Amamoor, guests can disembark to watch the locomotive turn on the historic railway turntable and enjoy time to explore the village green before returning to Gympie. On return, the experience continues with lunch at Rusty Rails Café, including your choice from the set menu and a beverage. The VIP Lounge Experience is ideal for couples, groups and visitors looking for a unique and memorable rail experience in the Gympie region. Advance bookings required.
Classic Rattler Run
The Mary Valley Rattler is one of Queensland's most iconic heritage steam train experiences, capturing the Gympie region's rich history while offering visitors a contemporary tourism attraction and the beauty of the spectacular Mary Valley landscape. In a beautifully restored C17 steam train, is an iconic experience like no other. Departing from the historic Gympie Station, you travel right into the heart of the picturesque Mary Valley. On arrival in the quaint town of Amamoor, here you can disembark your carriage and make your way to a viewing area to watch the train engine as it turns on the turntable. Enjoy a short stay to explore the Amamoor Village Green before reboarding your assigned carriage for your return journey to the Gympie Station. On board, volunteer guides provide a wealth of historical detail about the trains and the region as you enjoy the views and the nostalgia of travel from times past. Please note: Sunday Service returns to the Gympie Station at 12.30pm (30 minutes later than Wednesday and Saturday service). This includes an additional station stop at Dagun where you can enjoy outdoor games and wine and cheese tasting (can be purchased on the day at an additional cost).
VIP Booth Experience
Enjoy a more private and relaxed way to travel on the Mary Valley Rattler with the VIP Booth Experience, a unique heritage rail journey near the Sunshine Coast and Gympie. Departing from the historic Gympie Station, this premium experience includes priority boarding and reserved seating in your own booth within a heritage carriage. Ideal for groups, families or special occasions, the VIP Booth Experience offers a comfortable and social way to enjoy a scenic 40km return journey through the picturesque Mary Valley. As you travel through rolling farmland, forests and charming country towns, your personal attendant will serve a local tasting plate and beverage onboard. Bar facilities are also available throughout the journey. At Amamoor, guests can disembark to watch the locomotive turn on the historic railway turntable and enjoy time to explore the village green before returning to Gympie. On return, the experience continues with lunch at Rusty Rails Café, including your choice from the VIP set menu and a beverage. The VIP Booth Experience is available for groups of four or more guests. Smaller bookings may be seated with other VIP guests. Advance bookings are essential as availability is limited.
Pets on Board
If you’re looking at bringing your pet along to a Sunshine Coast tourist attraction, then you’re in luck. The Mary Valley Rattler is dog or cat friendly! Upgrade your booking to their Pets Onboard Carriage which has been configured with two segregated booths that can accommodate up to six people per booth with up to two pets per booth from the same family. Now your furry friends can come along for an exciting ride.
Ride with the Driver (Footplate Friends) Experience
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a steam train driver? Now, you can get a taste of the action! Upgrade to the Footplate Friends Experience, and you can ride as a guest in the cab with the train drivers. This is one of the most unique experiences the Sunshine Coast has on offer and is the perfect opportunity to treat yourself or offer as a gift to your train-loving friends or family. Plus, this experience contributes to the preservation of heritage rail in Queensland!
Silver Bullet High Tea Experience
The latest in the Mary Valley Rattler’s fleet of heritage trains is the Silver Bullet railmotor. These beautifully restored trains are living up to their name by offering a silver-service experience for passengers as they glide through Queensland’s picturesque Mary Valley. Departing Gympie every Friday at 10am, the Silver Bullet High Tea Experience is a must-do adventure for people who love to combine a spectacular landscape with a gourmet high tea. Start with a glass of bubbles, enjoy locally made sweet and savoury treats, and there’s unlimited tea and coffee flowing through the two-hour journey. Beers, wine and soft drinks are available for purchase along the way from the dedicated service team. The Mary Valley offers some of the most luscious landscapes you will see, as you wind through hills and over bridges on your way to the historic village of Dagun. This is an exceptionally atmospheric experience that captures the best of heritage Queensland, while indulging in some sweet and bubbly treats.
