Meriton Suites Southport has comfortable beds, great views and a convenient location, but our nine-night stay was let down by poor housekeeping, maintenance problems and several basic comfort issues. The positives: the beds and pillows were excellent, the views were beautiful, and the hotel is close to supermarkets, cafés and restaurants. Parking at A$20 per day was also reasonably priced. The biggest issue was cleanliness. On day one, I deliberately left a single raisin on the floor in an obvious spot to see whether the floor would actually be cleaned. When we checked out on day nine, the raisin was still there. Despite housekeeping supposedly servicing the room once every three days, it appears the floor was never properly vacuumed or mopped during our entire stay. Other visible dirt also remained after housekeeping visits. The sofa had an unpleasant smell, similar to dirty feet, which made the living area uncomfortable. The heating and air-conditioning system was also frustrating. One night, the heater stopped working and displayed “Mode Invalid”, leaving the room freezing cold. Maintenance came to adjust it, but afterwards the air-conditioning became stuck in heating mode and cooling also showed “Mode Invalid”. Reception said the bedroom and living room had to be on the same setting, which they already were, but the problem persisted. Guests should not have to troubleshoot something as basic as room temperature. The flooring looks like timber but is actually cold tile. During winter, the apartment felt chilly underfoot, yet no slippers were provided unless requested. Children’s slippers were only available in one size, and I was charged A$5 per pair even though they did not fit my two older children. The bathroom tap had a water-saving attachment that caused water to splash everywhere every time it was used. Saving water is sensible, but not when the design leaves the guest and vanity wet after every hand wash. The Wi-Fi also went down for more than an hour from around 12:30 pm during our stay. Anyone relying on it for work or meetings would have been in trouble. There was also no useful mobile reception or Wi-Fi in the car park. To make a call, message family or load directions, you have to drive out first. The gym felt extremely dated, almost like something from the 1980s. The harsh white lighting at the entrance also made the hotel feel more clinical than welcoming. Overall, Meriton Suites Southport has good bones, but the execution is inconsistent. Comfortable beds, views and location are not enough to make up for floors that appear not to be cleaned, unreliable climate control, a smelly sofa and dated facilities. Three stars feels fair.
An annual visitor to this wonderful hotel now. Reception are brilliant and simply could not be more helpful. Amenities aee well kept. Lovely little park right at the door and shops within 10 meters of the front door. Easy access to Lightrail for broader Surfers Paradise sightseeing and importanty for me to the starting area of the GC Marathon event
Pros- It's very near the tram station and the park. My room had nice views of the water. The kitchen was sufficiently supplied. Cons- The sheets on my bed was covered in hair. Not just one or two strands- it was COVERED in it. There was so much hair that I had to ask housekeeping to bring me new sheets. It was like a man had shaved and scattered his hair trimmings all over the sheets. I can't imagine housekeeping didn't notice this when they were making the bed. Given that the majority of the hair was towards the bottom end of the bed, it makes me wonder if they put the sheets on that way intentionally with the hope that the guest won't notice if they only pull the covers back partway. Regardless of whether this was intentional or not, it was gross and unacceptable. I didn't even get an apology when I told the front staff about this. Second con- no wifi for the first two days. There was very spotty wifi at night but none when I checked in or the next day. I only had wifi on the third day. Third con- There are few restaurants and cafes within walking distance. There are only two cafes close enough for breakfast, and they were really busy with all the hotel guests (the hotel does not have it's own dining) and the race participants (I was there during the Gold Coast Marathon). This is not the hotel's fault, but I won't stay in this area again.
This is not a resort. It is a perfect apartment building. Walking distance to one of the best croquet clubs in South East Queensland. The sauna is well looked after and smells devine. The lap pool is cool enough. The outdoor pool is salt water and is heated perfectly for a winter swim. Such a perfect place to rest and restore while playing in a croquet tournament.
The Ocean Front rooms are directly above Gold Coast Highway, and even on the 38th floor the supposed “double glazing” does very little: high-powered motorbikes whining, hoons racing their sports cars, jackhammers all day and night, and a train rattling and squeaking past at all hours. I'd come up from Sydney to escape construction noise 150 m away at home, and ended up being forced to catch an Uber to work in the public library every day, despite paying for five-star hotel accommodation in Southport. I've stayed with Meriton over a hundred times and generally loved the chain, which is why I'm so disappointed with Meriton Gold Coast. I booked a waterfront room at Meriton Southport for more than two months, purely to work, and my real problem wasn't even the noise — it was how one manager handled it. The day I arrived I asked to have a look at a back room, thinking I'd move — a considerable downgrade from the waterfront room, which I was happy to accept if it gave me adequate conditions to work in. The manager was extraordinarily abrasive and belittling, and insisted it was just as noisy out the back, which simply isn't true, given the front is directly above Gold Coast Highway and the back isn't. When I asked for a few minutes to sit in a room and check before committing to a two-month booking, she refused and bullied me into deciding on the spot, despite an obvious 60 day plus booking. She also claimed Meriton never shows guests rooms — yet staff at three other Meriton properties have spent considerable time showing me half a dozen rooms in one go, so that's simply untrue. Every time I've asked her about moving since, she's belittled and essentially attacked me again, in front of other staff. Every other staff member here has been helpful and professional, three were even very nice and friendly to deal with. This one manager completely ruined my stay and nearly cost Meriton a 60- or even 90-day booking from a loyal customer. All I'm asking is about ten minutes in one of the 01-series rooms on a very high floor, to make sure staying at Meriton is the right move for me. Can someone other than the supposed manager of this place help me, please?
