Located in the historic Honeysuckle Railway workshops, the Museum is right in the heart of Newcastle. Newcastle Museum brings to life significant moments of past, present and future in three major permanent exhibitions open free to visitors.
A Newcastle Story explores the natural environment, Newcastle’s people and stories. Fire and Earth unveil the hot and heavy industrial heart of the Hunter in a spectacular showcase of the region’s major industries. In Supernova, science, maths and engineering are the nuts and bolts of these interactive exhibits that challenge, inspire and engage people of all ages. The Museum also hosts temporary and travelling exhibitions throughout the year. From blockbuster visiting shows to locally-based community exhibitions, the Museum ensures there is always something new to entice and interest visitors.
Entry is free. You can access via the Civic Light Rail Stop and enter through Museum Park, behind the Newcastle Visitor Information Centre.

I had a wonderful time visiting this museum earlier today (June 28, 2026, around 10:30 AM). The museum does an excellent job of documenting Australia's history, achievements, and cultural development through a wide range of engaging exhibits. Topics range from the country's industrial heritage, transportation, and locomotion to interactive galleries on science and physics. There are also fascinating exhibitions on fashion, surfing, and other aspects of Australian culture, making the museum appealing to visitors with a variety of interests. The museum itself is beautifully designed. While it retains the thoughtful layout typical of major museums, the interior feels bright, modern, and highly interactive. Many of the exhibits encourage hands-on participation, making the experience especially enjoyable for families with children while remaining equally engaging for adults. I easily spent several hours exploring the galleries and still felt there was more to see. Whether you're interested in science, technology, history, or culture, this museum offers something worthwhile for everyone. Overall, it's one of the attractions I would highly recommend visiting. Informative, well-curated, and thoroughly enjoyable, it's a fantastic way to spend a few hours while learning more about Australia's rich history and innovation.

I went for the Mr Squiggle exhibition but enjoyed every minute of my time there. A great way to learn about the history of Newcastle. With ancestors from Newcastle it was great to learn about the coal mining industry my Great Great Grandfather would have been a part of. Nice way to spend an afternoon with the kids or on your own.

Really enjoyed visiting Newcastle Museum. Came around 11am and it was still quiet, started getting busier around 12pm. The place and toilets were very clean, and the staff were super friendly. There aren’t a lot of exhibits, but I really liked the hallway with all the historical stories on the walls. The museum feels very local and connected to everyday life, which made it interesting to read. The place isn’t very big, so around 1 hour is enough to walk around, or about 2 and a half hours if you like reading all the stories and information. Nice atmosphere overall :)

This a pretty nice little museum that is free to enter so that's great and you find out some cool things about the town of Newcastle. For the best part was the mining section where you find out BHP was started in Newcastle and was quite cool seeing all the old gear and photos from back in the day.

We had a lovely outing to the museum especially my 5 year old son. He really enjoyed the interactive science exhibition. The museum itself is not very big and entry was free. The staff are very friendly.
