Port Macquarie Museum

Port Macquarie Museum is temporarily closed whilst they complete urgent repairs and conservation work to the historic Store building.

Port Macquarie Museum showcases Port Macquarie's history from its British settlement as a penal colony in 1821, through to the present day as a popular tourist destination and vibrant regional city. The award-winning museum's extensive collection is displayed across several rooms and galleries in a series of themed exhibits. Displays are regularly updated, and temporary exhibitions are held from time to time. Visits for schools and other groups by appointment. Free audio guide available.

Port Macquarie was one of the earliest convict settlements outside of Sydney. The Museum building and additions are classified by the National Trust of Australia (NSW) as a rare example of a convict-built structure. The historic Store building is State-significant.

The Museum won Silver at the 2026 North Coast Regional Tourism Awards and 2025 NSW Tourism Awards in the cultural tourism category, and Bronze at the 2024 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards.
