Michael Armstrong Studio is a solo art & gallery. Michael Armstrong (Mike) is one of Australia's most benevolent, intuitive, technical and innovative artists. Deliberate and detailed in his distinct personal style, Mike is renowned for his nude female figures, metaphorical portraits of veterans, alluring paintings, and dynamic sketches.
Mike's work expresses individual qualities. Hinting at an enigma, he brings together personal elements that vacillate between beauty and realism. Using layering and tactile substances, Mike ignites the viewer's curiosity with suggestions of movement, embodiment and veiled meaning. With the ability to evoke emotion and create mesmerising and meaningful allegories, Mike has been a finalist in many prestigious art prizes, and his works are held in numerous public and private collections in Australia and overseas.
In his art practice, Mike has developed distinct themes and a unique style for creating art from life. Best known for his nude portraits of veterans and friends, Mike's practice has also extended to figurative sculpture in bronze and resin, bringing his work to life.
Mike's original paintings, drawings (prints and original works) and unique sculptures are available to view by appointment.
The studio space is thoughtfully designed for accessibility and maximum engagement. It is a shared space with Flow and Food Yoga & Ayurveda and Rogue Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
I’ve attended Michael’s drawing workshops and also modelled for his classes, and I can highly recommend him. Michael is a talented artist and teacher, but what stands out most to me is his compassion, inclusiveness and genuine care for people. He creates a welcoming environment where everyone feels comfortable, supported and encouraged, regardless of their experience level. His work with veterans, and the support he extends to their families, is truly inspirational. It’s his own lived experiences and authenticity that make both his workshops and his broader work so meaningful and impactful. A special mention to Squish the bulldog, who is a lovable character and always adds to the warm atmosphere. Michael is one of those rare people whose talent is matched by his kindness, and I’m grateful to have experienced both.
My friend and I did an art class with Mike - "An introduction to sculpting from life", Mike is/was a phenomenal teacher. He was enthusiastically helpful in his reply to our many, many questions. His teaching style and insightful feedback led to an enjoyable, engaging primer into learning the art of sculpting. I would absolutely recommend his workshops/courses to anyone who is looking to develop as an artist, or learn a new skill with friends in a fun and supportive environment. Thanks again Mike!
I've had the pleasure of taking part in workshops with Mike as both a participant and life model. Mike is a very patient and thorough instructor, taking participants through techniques that he has learnt and mastered over the years in his many different mediums. As a model, I've found Mike to be very professional and respectful, always providing comfortable furniture and supports to pose on and checking in to ensure my welfare. An added benefit of taking workshops and classes here is that the studio space itself is beautiful, filled with natural light and Mike's own artwork on the walls, and Squish the Bulldog always happy to greet everyone on arrival. Highly recommend for those newly dipping their toes into an artistic practice as well as people wanting to sharpen their skills.
I have done a couple of courses with Mike and have found hi to be the best art teacher I have ever had. I’ve done lots of courses with other people over the years, but Mike was the first person to actually teach me how to draw & paint. Before I had no idea what I was doing, but would just muddle along, but now I have enough skills thanks to Mike to be able to comfortably draw faces, bodies, still life & urban sketching. Most importantly though, I can now paint! I was terrified of mixing colours, but Mike made it really make sense for me on both a theoretical and practical basis. I am no longer stuck with just watercolour pencils, but am able to comfortably paint with oil paint (something I never ever thought I’d be able to do!). Thanks to Mike I now see the whole world in a totally different way, and am enjoying exploring all different styles of painting and drawing. I couldn’t have made this massive leap in my skills without Mike’s expert tuition and guidance. Having said all this, the best thing about Mike is that he is a kind, gentle person, who is able to guide and teach people of all levels. I feel exceedingly lucky to have him in Canberra - he is the kind of teacher I would fly half the way around the world to do a workshop with.
I can highly recommend Michael Armstrong Studio. I think, it’s a friendly and welcoming place for anyone interested in developing their artistic skills. I like the studio location, just a short walk from the tram station, making it easy to get to. Also Michael Armstrong is an excellent art teacher who is patient, knowledgeable, and supportive. He teaches a wide range of skills, including drawing from a live model, portrait drawing, and sculpture. His classes are both inspiring and informative, and he creates a relaxed atmosphere where students can learn and improve at their own pace.
