Miko is a showcase of fabulous design. Everything in their hand-picked collection makes the heart leap with joy. Visiting in person is an aesthetic feast and their website, too, is meticulously curated. Since arriving in Canberra two years ago, I’ve purchased a pair of bedside tables finished in a dark wine-coloured lacquer, both custom-made in Australia for me; four edgy ceramic hooks from Anchor in Melbourne; and, most recently, a Filo Chair from Italy in yellow. Given the right budget, you could furnish an entire house there; for the rest of us, Miko is the place to find the stand-alone item that will bring into focus an otherwise random collection of domestic furniture —- and make it sing. With each of my carefully planned acquisitions, Stuart Finlayson, the owner, has been exceptionally supportive. Stuart is friendly, highly knowledgeable and generous with his ideas - but only when asked! He is deeply interested in your own approach to a given project, and endlessly patient. My discussions with him about the precise shade of paint finish for the bedside tables to complement an old, worn plank bedstead bought fifty years ago went on for weeks. The result is that rarest of rare outcomes: absolute perfection.
