Luxury Eco Safari Villas Nestled under a rich canopy of trees, Cooinda's Yellow Water Villas balance luxury with a commitment to environmental sustainability. They are built on stilts to minimise impact on the land, as the preservation of country is a key priority of Murumburr Traditional Owners Each of the five luxury villas have a bathtub on the large veranda outside, with a completely air-conditioned interior. The ensuite bathroom, dining area and lounge area with daybeds make our villas the perfectly comfortable base for your Kakadu adventure. The daybeds can sleep 2 small children. A re-imagination of the tactile textures and resilient nature of the vast billabong landscape is captured throughout the interiors, with raw materials – reclaimed native timbers, earthen clay, ageing brass and woven plant-dyed grass fibres. Each Yellow Water Villa is named after a native Indigenous animal of the Kakadu region, themed throughout with personal stories of the local Murumburr community – from the pillows to the interior decorations. Artworks and decorations have been sourced from local Bininj (Aboriginal) artists as well as the famed Marrawuddi Art Gallery in Jabiru. This Bininj community and their culture has coexisted harmoniously with Kakadu lands for over 65,000 years.
Mixed feelings about this place. $54 a night for an unpowered site is okay, but the showers were dirty, which is disappointing for this price point and setup. On the plus side, the two pools are great and the restaurant is very good. Breakfast is overpriced ($38 for full hot & cold, with coffee extra—it would be nice to mention there's a free coffee machine right next to it). The cold-only option at $25 is fine with decent variety, but definitely not worth the money overall. Friendly staff, though.
The infrastructure is good, but you can definitely tell this place is set up to handle large numbers of visitors rather than provide a more personal experience. The overall condition and cleanliness could definitely be improved, especially considering the price. We found it to be quite expensive. The main advantage is its location if you’re planning to do the Yellow Water Cruise. You can either take the shuttle from the campground or drive yourself, which makes it very convenient for the sunrise or sunset cruises without having to travel far. Apart from that, we wouldn’t really recommend staying here. We’d suggest staying in Jabiru instead, where you’ll find more affordable options that are in the same or even better condition.
We stayed for 3 nights in a Lodge Room at Cooinda Lodge. The room itself was perfectly fine. Prices are quite high, but that’s to be expected given the location inside Kakadu National Park. However, what really shouldn't happen at a resort of this calibre is the poor Wi-Fi. Even when it connects, it’s only available near reception and the restaurants, and it's virtually useless—either completely down or incredibly slow. Since there is no mobile reception otherwise, this is a major issue if you need to organize the next legs of your NT road trip... For the price and the resort's reputation, you should honestly expect fast Wi-Fi property-wide, or at the bare minimum, a working connection around the main facilities.
If you’re not camping and happen to be self driving a hire car, there are very limited options for accommodation near Yellow Water cruises. This is because hire car rules preclude driving between dusk and dawn, and the two most recommended cruise times are - you guessed it - dusk and dawn. This hotel is exceptionally well located, clean and comfortable - but value for money is not a strength. It should be about half the price of what is charged, but supply and demand has determined what they can get away with.
If you are coming to Kakadu, do yourself a favour and come and stay at Cooinda Lodge. It's clean, comfortable, well appointed and in a great position to plan a few days exploring the region. The food is higher quality and more varied than that offered in Jabiru hotels. Wifi is slow, perhaps that's an advantage as you can truly get offline and experience Kakadu
