About

Prior to the Stuart Highway upgrade during World War II, visitors usually arrived in Darwin by ship. From at least as early as the 1880's, passengers disembarked at the Port of Darwin and climbed the escarpment via the walkway to town known colloquially as Chinaman's or Traveller's Walk. The path began at the railway yards with steps up to Cavenagh Street and finished at the Terminus Hotel.

Got dropped off here by free shuttle bus from Stokes's Hill Wharf (in front of RFDS facilty). Helpful driver said it will be the shortest walk up to Cavenagh St above where I was meeting friends for lunch. Yup - it was was short - kind of, for the fitter person 😉😉. Lot more steps to get up to upper Esplanade/Harry Chen Street & then a right turn into Cavenagh. This used to be the main walking route up the escarpment from the Wharf area to the township for newly arrived by sea in the early days. Heaving up over rough hewn steps constructed by by early Chinese labour who knew how to work with this type of rockface. You will pass the heritage Roadmaster's house which is otherwise hidden from view. Do love unexpected heritage encounters like this. Should spruce this up - It is a significant heritage..✨️✨️
