Bonorong is a Sanctuary for wildlife run by a passionate team of like-minded people. They're a social enterprise: a little business with a big heart.
Just 30 minutes north of Hobart's CBD, they are home to many animals, including Tasmanian devils, wombats, echidnas, birds, quolls and more. They also have free-roaming Forester kangaroos who are always keen for a good scratch on the chest and some gentle hand feeding (roo food included with entry).
A visit to Bonorong is not complete without joining one of their daily guided tours. These tours are free with entry and give you the opportunity to meet some of their most popular locals: the wombats, devils and echidnas. You will hear little-known facts and stories of the wildlife in their care. Tour groups, school groups and after-school groups can all be catered for with private tours and more.
They have a Food Hut onsite, making it a great stop for lunch with 100% plant-based meals. Bonorong is easily accessible by car, with free parking onsite.
Daily: 09:00–17:00

Winter's shorter days mean this 1hr night feeding tour lets you experience the best of what our wildlife sanctuary has to offer in a short, family-friendly timeframe. Enter our animals' world and hand-feed some of Tasmania's charismatic creatures like Forester kangaroos, wombats and Eastern quolls. You can also help your guide feed the Tasmanian devils their dinner while learning about conservation efforts – an experience sure to leave you feeling warm and fuzzy on the cooler nights.
Prices: $36.50 child (3-15 years) and $73.50 adult. Suitable for ages 3 years and older. Full terms and conditions are available on the checkout page when booking through our website.
A Must-Visit Wildlife Experience Just Outside Hobart! If you are looking for an authentic encounter with Tasmania's unique wildlife, Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Brighton is well worth the 30-minute drive from the Hobart CBD. The Experience: The sanctuary is home to an incredible array of native species. During our visit, we saw everything from Laughing Kookaburras and Galahs to the majestic Tasmanian Masked Owl. A real highlight was getting up close with the Spotted-tailed Quoll and seeing the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo. The kangaroo enclosure is a must-visit; they are very friendly, especially if you happen to be there during one of their guided feeding sessions! Practical Tips for Your Visit Timing: You can easily walk the entire grounds on your own in about 30 minutes, but I highly recommend timing your visit with their 30 minute guided tours (held 4 times daily). They provide great insights and kangaroo feed! The Drive: Keep in mind that the final stretch of road leading to the sanctuary is gravel/off-road, so take it slow. Parking: No issues here - there is ample parking with space for about 30 cars and 10 buses. Cost: Adult tickets are $35.50, Kids $16.00 which feels like a great contribution considering the sanctuary is mostly run by dedicated volunteers and does amazing conservation work. Facilities We stopped by The Burrow, their on-site café, which serves up good coffee and snacks, perfect for a quick refuel after walking the trails. There are also some great photo ops, including a cool sculpture of a wombat family near the entrance. Overall, it’s a wonderful, heart-centered sanctuary. Knowing that your entry fee goes toward supporting Tasmanian wildlife makes the trip even more rewarding.
We visited Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary to do their Feeding Frenzy experience. We were looked after and guided by Mia, who made the experience a delight! It was so lovely to get a more up-close encounter with their resident creatures and to learn more about their practices and values. Definitely worth the visit if you’re in and around Hobart - Visits contribute to supporting their care for so many of the wildlife in Tasmania as a whole. They operate the largest 24/7 Wildlife Rescue Service in Tasmania! Mia, thank you for the tour and for your genuine and warm disposition. You really made the experience great!
Bonorong was one of our favourite stops in Tasmania! We fell in love with the friendly kangaroos, got up close with some amazing native wildlife, and learned so much from the passionate staff. Such a fun few hours, and even better knowing your visit helps support wildlife rescue. Definitely worth the trip from Hobart!
Absolutely loved my visit to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary! From the moment I arrived until the time I left, I felt like I had stepped into a welcoming family home. Every staff member was so friendly, warm and genuinely hospitable, creating such a lovely atmosphere. I arrived early and enjoyed wandering around the sanctuary before the night tour. I was first welcomed by a lovely keeper in the gift shop, who made me feel right at home. Our night tour guide, Jesse, was fantastic—knowledgeable, charismatic and happy to answer all of my questions. Being able to hand-feed the animals and get so close to them was an incredible experience. The animals were much more active around dinner time, which made the tour even more special. This was one of the absolute highlights of my Tasmania trip. Bonorong is doing an amazing job caring for and advocating for its wildlife, and I can’t recommend a visit highly enough!
