The Devils@Cradle Tasmanian devil sanctuary is a breeding and conservation facility for three of Tasmania's unique threatened carnivorous marsupials; the Tasmanian devil, the Spotted-tail quoll, and Eastern quoll.
The facility is located on the edge of the Cradle Mountain National Park World Heritage area and conducts in-situ conservation programs for the Tasmanian devil including an on-site breeding program for insurance of the species.
A visit to the sanctuary day or night will allow you to observe these extraordinary animals up close whilst one of our keepers will give you an understanding of their life cycle and the threats that confront them.
The sanctuary is open from 9:30 am with 'Day Keeper Tours' being conducted at 10:30 am and 3:00 pm, 'Feeding Tours' at 1:00 pm and 5:30 pm and 'Joey Encounters' at 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm. In the evening visitors can observe the amazing night time antics of the animals being fed. Behind the scenes tours allow visitors to have up-close encounters with these animals.
Devils @ Cradle is committed to the conservation and protection of this now vulnerable species. The centre operates a successful captive breeding program, ensuring the ongoing survival of Tasmanian devils in healthy numbers in the wild.
We had an amazing visit to the Devils@Cradle - we did the Joey Encounters which included general access. There were so many Tasmanian Devils and Quolls to look at in the enclosures. And the Joey Encounter was awesome - highly recommend. The guide was super knowledgeable and caring of the animals. It was clear they had spent a lot of time with these amazing animals. The Tasmanian Devil has become my favourite Aussie animal now! Also feeding the Pademelon was awesome. The Encounter finished with a mini bonfire and roasted marshmallows - surrounded by Tasmanian Devils in their enclosures.
Our 5:30pm Feeding Tour at Devils @ Cradle was, by far, beyond anything we expected. Our guide, Prue, was absolutely fantastic, funny, kind, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable. In just 1.5 hours, we learnt so much about Tasmanian devils, from their eating and mating habits to the challenges they face both in the sanctuary and in the wild. We also loved learning about the quolls. We had heard of them before, but Prue taught us so much about their diet, life expectancy, behaviours, and the important role they play in Tasmania's ecosystem. It was inspiring to see the passion and dedication of everyone at Devils @ Cradle. The work you're doing to protect these incredible animals and make a real difference is truly amazing. Thank you for all the effort you put in every single day, and thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion with us. We feel so lucky to have experienced this tour and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Tasmania. It was informative, memorable, and an absolute highlight of our trip.
A must visit spot! We had an amazing visit, we did the PM devil and quoll feeding experience and visited the sanctuary beforehand to look around. The enclosures were fantastic and the animals were active and all looked very healthy and happy. Prue, our guide, was great - friendly, funny, extremely passionate and knowledgeable; gave us so much information without being bombarded. Seeing such iconic but elusive animals feeding in a natural setting was just amazing. The conservation work these guys do is incredible and they deserve all the credit and support they can get! 100% recommended, fantastic experience and facility!
Went for Dessert With Devils on 7th July 7pm. It was a phenomenally sunny day. BUT the night was still freezing! Please dress really warmly if doing this night tour. We had Zoe (I think that was her name) for this tour. She had to be one of the most enthusiastic, charming and lovely lady ever! She made us all enjoy the devils and the quolls and taught us so much about their conservation, lifestyle, feeding habits etc. I think I learnt so much more here than I had the other sanctuary I went on mainland Australia. She was knowledgeable, kind, cheerful and we could all sense her true passion for these adorable creatures. She finally made us all realize that the Tasmanian devils have all been wrongly portrayed. We got to touch 2 of the devils as they had been hand raised and were tame. Truly a magical and beautiful time spent here! Even after an exhausting 7 hour climb this morning, we had absolutely no regrets coming here! Part of the proceeds of these tours also go towards the conservation and preservation of these highly endangered creatures. BOOK IN ADVANCE PLEASE! We booked about 1 month in advance in winter season.
We had an awesome time here despite the terrible weather, our feeding tour guide Renee was incredibly knowledgeable and provided an excellent + informative experience for us and our curious 10 year old. Would recommend to anyone at any time and will likely return ourselves too. I never really review things on here but this was worth giving 5☆.
