The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens is Australia's premier cool climate garden, offering travellers a peaceful pause only minutes from the heart of Hobart.
Established over 200 years ago, this 14-hectare site includes many unique collections that can be viewed in a relaxed stroll across 2 hours. Visitors can explore displays of Tasmanian flora, featuring rare and threatened species, and see unusual specimens of sub-Antarctic plants. A collection of mature conifer trees, planted in the 19th century, provide a majestic canopy above a Victorian-era lily pond. A traditionally-styled Japanese Garden, herbaceous perennial border, and sandstone conservatory provide year-round delight.
The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens are open daily year-round. Located at Lower Domain Rd, Queens Domain, Hobart, they are only a 5 minute drive or 25 minute walk from the city centre. Ample free parking is available.

We visited the Royal Botanical Gardens at Hobart twice this week, on Sunday 14 June and Wednesday 17 June 2026.
As I’m in a wheelchair, there was a wheelchair accessible path to some of the gardens.
The disabled parking bays are directly at the front entry gates.
The front entry gates are exquisite.
The gardens are spectacular with many fine large tree specimens and the rainforest section is spectacular.
The beautiful Lucilia was in bloom which has a very sweet and intoxicating smell. It was sublime and the flowers were gorgeous too ♥️
Unfortunately, the conservatory was closed for renovation.
The Japanese Garden was beautiful but wasn’t wheelchair accessible.
The Botanical Shop, kiosk and restaurant are definitely worth visiting too. The view from the restaurant foyer over the river is gorgeous.
The Royal Botanical Gardens are a definitely worth a visit or two.
Thank you for an enjoyable afternoon and morning.

Almost missed this as we thought this maybe like just another garden, but it wasn't! We saw a beautiful Japanese garden there and plenty of trees and plants and exhibits that were clearly marked according to the regions. There's a mock antarctic plant exhibit which is cold inside too. Plenty of free parking around and no entry fees either! There's a restaurant within the grounds, a coffee shop and a place to buy ice creams and souvenirs. Highly recommended

Absolutely beautiful place! Every spot in the garden is lovely and peaceful. The greenery is so well maintained, and the atmosphere is refreshing and relaxing. The flower displays are stunning, and the Floral Clock is especially amazing — such a unique and beautiful feature. I truly loved spending time here. A perfect place to relax, take photos, and enjoy nature. Highly recommended

One of my favourite places in Hobart.
I visit the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens almost every week with my daughter, and it’s always such a peaceful and beautiful experience. The gardens are incredibly well looked after, with so many lovely spots to walk, relax, and enjoy nature together. The new coffee shop is also a fantastic addition — great coffee and a really nice atmosphere. Perfect for families, morning walks, or just slowing down for a while. Highly recommend visiting!
