Richmond Gaol is the oldest intact gaol in Australia, located just a 20-minute drive north-east of Hobart.
The Gaol was built in 1825 and is one of the best preserved convict structures still existing in Tasmania. You can step inside a solitary confinement cell measuring just one by two metres (6x3 feet). One of the Gaol's most infamous inmates was English convict, Ikey Solomon, said to be the model for Charles Dicken's character Fagin in Oliver Twist.
The Gaol housed both Men and Women. You'll see chain-gang sleeping rooms, the flogging yards, the cook house and holding rooms, all with historical relics and documents to bring the convict past to life.
Fully stocked souvenir and gift shop located on site.
Beautifully presented and informative piece of Richmond history. Our 10yo son enjoyed the interactive search for objects / graffiti. The almond tree looked stunning in the Sunny courtyard. The staff member working was knowledgeable and very helpful

Had a really amazing experience here, a must do in Richmond. Entering through the threshold and into the loose-gravel courtyard immediately triggers a shift in atmosphere. The contrast between the quaint surrounding township and the impressive sandstone walls is palpable. The gaol does an exceptional job of letting the architecture speak for itself. The ambient audio cues subtle echoes of disembodied colonial voices and clinking chains reverberate through the airing yards, instantly enveloped me in an eerie, deeply immersive melancholia. I was continuously blown away by the pure history, and great customer service of this place, with our excellent tour guide Tommy who was incredibly knowledgeable about the history. Life changing experience.

We really enjoyed visiting today. So glad we are not convicts though. Poor people had it tough back then. The entry price was reasonable and the gift shop was terrific. Thank you.

A great part of Tasmania's history! Entry is super easy and affordable. It is layed out very well, you basically just do a circle, going into every room/area as you go. There are so many signs and so much interesting information. Get ready to learn people's name and see where the loved, experiencing their story! The displays of old tools and contraptions were very well done and it was a very authentic experience!
