Tamar Island Wetlands Centre and Reserve

About
The Tamar Island Wetlands is a unique urban wetlands reserve just a ten-minute drive from Launceston. A short (500 metre) walk from the interpretation centre takes you to a bird hide with seating where you can observe wetland birds on the lagoon and enjoy a restful break.
An outstanding interpretation centre offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the value of the wetlands. The interpretation centre and the boardwalk to the island have easy wheelchair access and both have disabled toilet facilities.
The Tamar Island Wetlands Centre offers a range of activities for both adults and children. Volunteers present talks and activities on topics such as wetlands ecology, macro-invertebrates and the pest fish species Gambusia.

Have wanted to visit here for many years after only getting to do the first section a few years ago. Got lucky with the weather and went on a sunny afternoon. It is an easy drive from the Launceston and there is a small gravel carpark off the freeway (no shade). It's not a ticketed entry system but donations are appreciated- there is an electronic pay station where you can donate via card so you don't have to have cash. Proceeds go to the maintenance of the facilities so please contribute if you can. There is a circuit walk of about 3kms return. Mostly flat except for the very end of the one way track where there is a short uphill. Toilets are located at the visitors centre at the start and also where the uphill section is. There is also a rest area there with a few picnic tables if you want to stop for lunch. It is an exposed walk so on a sunny day, I'd recommend sunglasses, hat or sunshade of some sort. Lots of bird lovers with binoculars as the wetlands are vast and teeming with bird life. We saw many species, and also pademelons and a snake! We are lucky to have access to natural places like this.

What an amazing place this is. Highly recommend visiting the centre and taking a stroll. It is very easy walk with some great views. There is plenty of parking and free entry but you are free to donate if you like using a machine. Kudos to the council and the volunteers for keeping this place open to public

Gorgeous beyond measure. I’ve never seen so many birds on the water. The walkways are well maintained, the walk is comfortable, the view is beautiful, and (as long as it isn’t a public holiday) it’s quiet with very few people. I went here several times during my trip. Please note that while entry is free, it does ask for a small donation on entry to help maintain the place (couple dollars is suggested - and eftpos is accepted).

Great experience. Best done earlier in the day before it gets too hot. We did it on an outgoing tide. Wonderful to see the changes to the landscape, birdlife and jelly blubber shifting with the tide. Took us just under 1.5 hours, but that was with stopping to look at things and take photos.
