In 1914, more than 40,000 Australians and New Zealanders left Albany, bound for the Great War. This is their story.
The National Anzac Centre is Australia's foremost museum honouring the Anzac legend. Set within Albany Heritage Park, the Centre offers visitors a deeply personal connection with the Anzac experience.
Upon entering the National Anzac Centre, visitors assume the identity of one of 32 Anzac characters and walk with them as they experience the First World War: from recruitment; through training and embarkation; engagement in conflicts in the Indian Ocean prior to arrival in Egypt; and on to Gallipoli, the Palestine and Sinai; and across the Western front.
These personal stories unfold through interactive, multimedia displays and audio commentary, as visitors witness the First World War through the eyes and stories of their Anzac.
The National Anzac Centre experience concludes with the discovery of each Anzac's fate and the opportunity for visitors to document their own feelings through an interactive wall that displays their message within the National Anzac Centre.
The Centre opened on 1 November 2014, to mark the centenary of the Australian and New Zealand troop convoys' departure from Albany's King George Sound to enter the First World War.

Learnt so much more about our soldiers who served our country in WW1. Had no idea Albany played so much importance in the lead up to sending of our fleet. The hidden artillery and bunkers among the hillside walking tracks and the view from the Convoy Lookout over the bay where Aussie & NZ armed ships sailed off to war was awe-inspiring. As for the Anzac Centre, what an amazing tribute to the 40,000+ soldiers who left our shores. Highly recommend
Wonderful experience and tribute to the Anzac's. Beautiful displays and story telling. The surrounding old barracks and gardens are fantastic to walk around and views of the harbour are amazing. Definitely worth a visit.👌😃
This was an excellent experience. We really enjoyed the stories and the interactive cards showing the life of soldiers and nurses. The audio option was also great. Amazing view from inside the centre. Overall, worth the ticket price
The National ANZAC Centre is the premier must-see tourist destination and civic history education site in Albany. Put it on your agenda if you are visiting the Great Southern wine district. The National ANZAC Centre, drawing on the role that Albany played as a departure point for the fist ANZAC forces heading to the First World War, uses the personal stories of real soldiers (and a war correspondent) who were part of the first convoy to bring the ANZAC story to life. The focus appropriately starts with the Gallipoli campaign but then expands out to tell the stories of the ANZAC forces in the other theatres of the Great War. The charge of the 4th Lighthorse at Beersheba, the Australian at the Western Front and other theatres (including the early actions securing enemy colonial bases in the Pacific, about which I knew nothing before my visit). The museum sensitively dealt with the cost of the war. The death, the injuries sustained to bodies and minds, the grieving families, the families caring for those that came home changed, … and the Australian horses that never came home. (Something like 130,000 horses left Australia, only one returned.) Great use of technology made this an engaging interactive museum experience. This is a fantastic museum. You may find in emotionally moving. This is a must see.
Fascinating and well curated. A novel way to explore the personal stories of some of the troops and their experiences. Great views across the bay
