The sculpture "The Grazing Stallion" is dedicated to the memory of Peter Allen, the business developer of the Thoroughbred Hotel site. Created by Mark Ray, the sculpture was unveiled just in time for the 40th anniversary of the Scone Horse Festival. Peter Allen made significant contributions to the town, transforming the Thoroughbred Hotel, adding a bakery, restaurant, bar, and accommodation facilities. The development preserved the building's theme, showcasing the local racing and breeding history, both past and present.
The sculptor, Mark Ray began his journey into chainsaw art at the age of 50, though he has been drawing since childhood. These artistic skills translated seamlessly into chainsaw art, and Mark quickly produced numerous pieces. Mark sources his wood sustainably from local arborists and does not cut down any trees. Once he finds the right stump, he cuts it square and sets it flat. Working from an image in his mind, he carves the stump from the top down, getting the features into perspective. The base of the stump is left to support the sculpture. If the piece requires a smoother surface, he finishes it with an electric grinder. Mark’s distinctive style can be seen across the region. Keep an eye out and see if you can spot one of his remarkable creations.
Stopped in for lunch on our way to Glenbawn Dam. We had the lunch specials for $15 ! I had steak sandwich and it was so tasty , perfectly cooked and tender. My partner had the chicken burger and said it was soooo tasty . We will definitely return. Great service too
What a gem of a stay after a long day on the road! Beautiful renovated old hotel, a welcome and relaxed atmosphere with a vibe of quiet luxury, outstanding service and restaurant. Rooms are simply catered for yet very clean and comfortable. The food is excellent and cater for gluten free if needed and the wagyu steak is second to none, my recommended must have! There’s a bakery cafe inside downstairs with great breakfast options. We enjoyed our stay that on our return trip we stayed a second night having a relaxing couple of cold beverages a great meal. A big thank you to Fiona and your team for your hospitality! Cheers Jane and Bruce
My comments are only on the pub and bistro, I didnt stay in the hotel. The staff are extremely friendly and the place is spotlessly clean. The scruffy haired barman is charming and personable. I had a steak sandwich. The amount of steak in the sandwich is minimal. A paper thin slice of tomato and a few leaves of rocket are all that grace the sandwich, with a large dollop of bbq sauce. The menu said it comes with Swiss cheese (no cheese was on my sandwich). The sandwich is made of plain white bread. The chips are good but the portions leave you wanting more. I had a cake which was really good and tasted home baked.
Recommended for dinner as a first time visitor to Scone. Arrived before 7pm. One very small bar with several people waiting to get a drink. One poor lady trying to serve everyone. And making cocktails! No room to wait or queue. We sculled our drink and left to go somewhere else for dinner. No room, no staff and a very ordinary menu.
No milk in the room and the liquid soap dispenser was empty. I pointed this out to staff but it wasn’t addressed by the time I left. Also the chair in room 4 is so rickety I didn’t sit on in fear of it collapsing. The food was excellent.
