I have to say I was so surprised with how good it was here. I don’t know what I was expecting but it was way above my expectations. The staff were so kind and welcoming. It was a miserable rainy day and we arrived a bit before opening and a very kind man let us come in out of the rain. He was so friendly and very passionate about the place, I can’t remember his name but maybe the manager. Lots of fun for little kids and not overly busy which I love. Can’t wait to come back!
We walked from the train station, tricky to find your way without Google maps, not really designed with pedestrians in mind, and the car park was full, so maybe catch an Uber or Taxi. Interesting display of maritime and fishing vessels/history with a local focus on interactions with Indonesian fisherman and other cultures. We learnt a few things. Quite a few activities for kids but I don't think children would stay interested for long. Cafe was good (no outdoor seating currently, due to renovations). Worth going mostly for the submarine tour and to see the racing yacht, Australia II. Out the front are several walls with immigrants names on them but we couldn't find the explanation about how these were organised, by year, ship ....? Anyway, would be good to have some footpath/road markings to guide pedestrians.
Minor point but their cafe is really good. But it's dwarfed by the displays. They are well presented and really interesting. We spent about 3 hours there and could have stayed longer. My only disappointment was that I was looking forward to going inside the HMAS Owen. This is a famous submarine and I wanted to let my wife get a understanding of naval life. But not to be and she had to just look at the videos; which were very well done. Go, I'm sure anyone would find it fascinating.
I'm sure she would love the fishes in here. So cute by the way (The Whale-Shark Was cool but Slightly Creepy, still love it) Very interactive with all in the places, it was fun pressing all the buttons. Clean, and Even with some free water dispensers.
I went on my birthday to visit the With Live from Nonna exhibition. It's a wonderful comprehensive collection of stories, curios and the hardship some of these folk endured. Well done to families for their commitment to gather and loan so much. The exhibition includes in the ticket price and for free if you are a member ❤️ recipe cards from the same Nonnas.
