About

Discover the remarkable stories of women whose strength, skill and determination shaped life in Gawler and beyond from the First World War through to the Vietnam War.

The new Heritage Gallery exhibition Grit and Grace, explores how women served as nurses at home and overseas, supported loved ones through wartime hardship, kept families clothed through ingenuity and thrift, and stepped into industrial and technical roles during times of national need. From hospital wards and field hospitals to knitting circles, factory floors and hidden wartime bunkers, their contributions were vital, yet often unseen.

Through local stories, objects and lived experiences, this exhibition highlights how ordinary acts of work and care carried extraordinary impact. Join them to reflect on resilience, service and the enduring legacy of women's labour in the shared history.
