About Kelly Hill Caves Around two million years ago the sea was constantly changing between its present level and 125 metres lower, intermittently exposing the continental shelf. It was at this time that the dunes of Kelly Hill were formed as calcareous shell fragments from the exposed sea bed were windblown and deposited on the island’s south and west coast. Over a long period of time these dunes hardened into a porous limestone that is shaped by the action of percolating rainwater.
At Kelly Hill this has given rise to an underground labyrinth of sinkholes and caverns thought to extend for kilometres. Nature has again created some of its finest work here, with caves full of beautiful yet fragile stalagmites, stalactites, helictites and towering columns that transport visitors to another world.
We had a wonderful experience at Kelly Hill Caves. The sensory experience was amazing and made the tour even more enjoyable. Our guide Kyle was friendly and explained everything clearly and thoroughly. We really appreciated the experience and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Kangaroo Island.
An AMAZING experience. Our guide Adam is a great guy! We loved the interesting info on the history of formation of the caves. The light show was gorgeous.
We had an incredible time exploring Kelly Hill Caves during our family trip to Kangaroo Island. The guided tour took us deep into the stunning limestone caverns, filled with delicate stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, and towering columns that felt like stepping into another world. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and enthusiastic, sharing fascinating stories about the cave’s geology, formation history, and local wildlife while accommodating everyone’s pace on the walk and stairs. The immersive light and sound show was the absolute highlight, bringing the ancient formations to life with narration and dynamic lighting for a magical, educational experience unlike any other cave tour. Well worth the visit - highly recommend booking ahead, especially with the national parks pass! Perfect for families or anyone seeking natural wonders on KI.
Great experience with this guided tour of the Kelly Hill Caves. Kingsley our guide was knowledgable and engaging. The facilities were great and well fit out (no scrambling around, there were clear paths and stairs with handrails). It was quite remarkable to witness something so ancient and beautiful
📍 Kelly Hill Caves Karatta SA 5223 Just visited Kelly Hill Caves 🕯️ on Kangaroo Island and it was such a cool experience! 🦘✨ These caves were discovered in the 1880s and have been carved over thousands of years by underground water, creating amazing limestone formations like stalactites and stalagmites 🌱🪨. The way nature has shaped this place is truly stunning. The tour was very nice — we loved seeing how the caves were formed and learning about the history 🧭. There’s a nice light show at the end that highlights the formations beautifully 🌈, and the little touch of blowing out a candle at the end was something special 🕯️💫. One odd thing was that we couldn’t take any photos until the very end 📸🙅♀️, which was a bit strange. The guide said it’s because photos might disturb the cave environment, but I still wished we could capture more of the beauty along the way. Overall, a great experience, such a beautiful natural wonder — highly recommend if you’re on Kangaroo Island! 💛🌏
