Windsor is located about 50 kilometres north-west of Sydney and is one of the oldest European settlements in Australia. The historic charm of Windsor can be explored on our self-guided heritage walks.
Today, visitors can wander through this charming town known for its impressive collection of heritage buildings, some designed by convict architect Sir Francis Greenway, including St Matthew's Anglican Church and the Windsor Courthouse. While you're here, take time to visit St Matthew's Cemetery, where notable Hawkesbury figures are buried, including John Tebbutt, Dr Thomas Arndell, Captain John Babryn and William Cox.
You can collect a free Heritage Highlights booklet from the Hawkesbury Regional Museum or the Hawkesbury Visitor Information Centre in Richmond. Please note that many heritage buildings are privately owned and can only be viewed from the street.
Windsor’s town centre on a weekend night is absolutely charming. The heritage buildings, vintage lamp posts, and beautifully preserved architecture give it a unique character. The streets are lined with cute little stores, cosy restaurants, and quirky dessert shops, all adding to the welcoming atmosphere.
People were sitting on benches, enjoying the evening, and the warm glow from the heritage shopfronts made the whole place feel inviting. There’s a perfect blend of history and modern life here, and it’s a pleasure to just wander and take it all in.

Windsor is a beautiful little historic town, great for a walk and meal. Sunday Markets are good for a walk through and pick-up some local goods.

The town centre is beautiful on a weekend night. The historic water wheel in Windsor is a popular landmark located at the Baker Street end of The Windsor Mall on George Street. The old buildings, vintage lights, and well‑kept architecture give the area a special charm. The streets are filled with small shops, cosy places to eat, and fun dessert spots, which make the whole place feel warm and friendly.
People sit on benches enjoying the evening, and the soft light from the old shop fronts makes everything feel welcoming. The mix of history and modern life is perfect, and it’s really nice to walk around and enjoy the atmosphere.
