Port Elliot is a seaside town with plenty packed into a very walkable patch of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Around 81 kilometres from Adelaide, it sits between Middleton and Victor Harbor, with beaches, coastal walks, heritage streets, good food and independent shopping all close together.
Horseshoe Bay is the town's best-known beach, a sheltered cove popular for swimming and family beach days. Around the headlands, Knights Beach and Boomer Beach show a wilder side of the coast, with surf, rocky outcrops and walking trails connecting lookouts along the shoreline.
Back in town, The Strand is lined with cafés, restaurants, shops and heritage buildings, while the much-loved Port Elliot Bakery has become a destination in its own right. The historic Cockle Train also passes through Port Elliot on its route between Goolwa and Victor Harbor.
From May to October, southern right whales can also be spotted along this stretch of coast, adding another reason to linger through the cooler months.
