Notification of ongoing 1080 baiting - wild dogs and foxes

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting an ongoing baiting program from Friday 7 August 2026 to Tuesday 2 February 2027. The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. This program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise the impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Baiting programs will take place across Kosciuszko National Park Wild Dog Plan Areas including:

    • Thredbo/Ingebyra
    • Dalgety/Paupong
    • Corrowong/Tombong/Merriangaah

This includes the following sections of Kosciuszko National Park:

    • Sawpit Creek
    • Island Bend
    • Thredbo Valley
    • Moonbah
    • Ingebyra
    • Paupong
    • Numbla Vale
    • Corrowong

Baiting programs will also take place in nature reserves including:

    • Paupong Nature Reserve
    • Merriangaah Nature Reserve
    • Quidong Nature Reserve

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

For further information, please call the Jindabyne area office on 02 6450 5555.

About

A terrific place to break up a drive down along Snowy River can be found at Wallace Craigie lookout, just off the road. This vantage point over the most southern precinct of the park offers superb views along the river, and vistas of rugged ranges that are constantly changing throughout the shifting light of day. In winter, you may even see snow fall on the summits.

Bring a packed lunch and find a picnic table beneath the trees. This spot is popular with photographers, so don't forget to bring your camera for some spectacular shots. Some on-site interpretative material will help you understand what you're seeing.

Wallace Craigie lookout is good to visit at any time of year, though the best time for birdwatching is summer, when a variety of local species circle overhead. After having your fill of the view, continue south to find a series of riverside spots like Jacobs River Tongaroo campground, where you can get direct access to water for a refreshing swim in the summer months.
