Sandon Beach closures for aerial bitou bush treatment
Sections of Sandon Beach north of Sandon River campground in Yuraygir National Park will be periodically closed from 26 August to 18 September 2026 for aerial drone spraying operations.
This program is part of a systematic weed control program targeting Bitou bush throughout Yuraygir National Park. Bitou bush will be sprayed by drone with the herbicide Metsulfuron methyl 600/kg.
The operations are weather dependent. The area may be closed for a period of up to 4 hours. This work will not affect the camping areas.
Please follow all signs and directions of NPWS staff.

Follow the ancient wandering trails of Australia’s coastal emus on the multi-day Yuraygir coastal walk.
This colossal signposted track traverses the coastline from Angourie to Red Rock. The scenery and views along the way are diverse and astounding. You’ll encounter wildlife and wildflowers as you walk past heathland plains, long sandy beaches, tranquil creeks, lagoons, rocky headlands and even a marine park.
Tackle the full 65 kilometres with overnight camping stops along the way or break the track up into shorter segments. It’s best walked north to south with the sun at your back.
However you choose to undertake this journey through the traditional homelands of the Gumbaynggirr and Yaegl nations, it’s unlikely you’ll ever forget it.

Lovely environment, expensive if you stay at holidays parks (only options sometimes) and river crossings. Weather could affect progress also

Just did the very start near Angourie lookout. Nice and shady. Easy track for my elderly (late 80s) father in law.

Absolutely gorgeous views. Pristine coastal environment. A "crab country". Crabs are everywhere. All sorts, all sizes, even on the trails inside the park, some distance from the coast. The ground is holed with their burrows. Beaches are stunning. Quite gentle waves, lefts and rights, mostly for beginners and intermediates. Many beaches are empty, not a soul around. Lots of other wildlife. A perfect to have a day out. Or if you want to spend more time enjoying these natural wonders, campsites are also available.
