Be amazed by a model railway the size of a tennis court that's modelled on the 1950s/60s-era Bathurst-Tarana line. Watch the miniature operating trains and spot the tiny people, cars and sheep.
Relax with a coffee from the museum's cafe in the red train carriage outside or head into Kids Central, the children's play gallery with the world's largest permanent Brio set (a gigantic toy railway).

We visited here during our trip to Bathurst a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. This was the first time I’d visited a train museum of this sort, and it turned out to be a great introduction to the region’s railway history. There’s a good variety of displays, including detailed dioramas that make the stories easy to follow even for first‑timers. The museum is well laid out, easy to walk through, and gives a clear sense of how important the railway was to the area. A worthwhile stop if you’re visiting Bathurst.

The model trains were not very interesting. A great set up but spoiled by the unpleasant attendant who showed no interest. The children’s play area is exceptional. The man at the checkout was very friendly and helpful.

Excellent. Very nice social history museum with a brilliant room for the kids to play in and the model train set room is next level! They're currently building a Zigzag railway model and so far, it looks epic! Kudos to all the good people that run this place. We loved it and so did our little boy.

Great photos and stories of railways and their history. A steam engine to look at out the front, to see the engineering and work that went into building them. A working model rail of the western district and a zig zag model under construction. Coffee shop with good coffee and quality affordable food. Comfortable seating outside and a rail carriage to sit in, if you prefer. good for adults and kids.

The museum is a fantastic activity for young and not so young, making us regular visitors. The kid's room is a great hands on experience for the kids with the huge Brio set up, while the model layout is amazing. The main layout is very accessible, so even younger kids can see it without being carried, and the new Zig Zag will be a great addition. The friendly staff and volunteers make sure there's always something new or different to look at, with a special call out to Tim, who is always happy to share the amazing work he's doing at the painting desk and always engaging with the kids.
