The Box Vale Mine track follows the formation of a historic railway line and passes through cuttings, along embankments and through a tunnel 84 metres in length.
Although much of the surrounding terrain is steep and rocky, the four-point four-kilometre walking track has easy grades and the return walk takes about three hours.
There is also a 1.8-kilometre spur track through pleasant bushland to 40-foot falls and a very steep track leads to a vantage point below the falls.
Picnic tables and barbecues are provided near the track head car park.
Box Vale Mine Walking Track Maps are available from the Southern Highlands Welcome Centre (Information Centre).
Easy walk, we thought it gave lord of the rings vibes in some spots, lots of shadey spots to stop. Very slushy in the tunnel. Not our favourite track but worth a look definitely suggest taking water if its a hot day!

This was a pretty walk. Shady, scenic and filled with native plants. There is a lovely waterfall at the end if you want to go down a metal ladder beforehand (keep this in mind if you brought your dog as it may be tricky to climb down with it). There were only a couple minor issues - one was that there were a few signs in clumps, but for a lot of the walk there was almost no way to know exactly where you were/if you were going the right direction. I got lost a couple of times as it is really not clear where you’re meant to be. So I would suggest adding a couple more signs if possible. One other thing that you may want to keep in mind (but isn’t an issue) is that there is quite a steep and pretty long incline that led to and from the waterfall. Thankfully, though, the walk before that is basically flat and extremely easy to move along on. Other than those two minor inconveniences, this was a great and relaxing walk. Would recommend! :)

This is a relatively easy hike to complete.
The track starts opposite to the signage at the beginning .
Small inclines & declines, but nothing too difficult. Getting to the tunnel at the end of the track is rewarding too.
Plenty of fauna/ flora also.

This is a nice walk and we could not finish the 8km track due to rain. We never got to see the tunnel. But what we did see along the way was nice. There are a lot of beautiful birds to spot along the way too. The only issues I had with the walk is it gets a little tight along some parts of the route and there are a lot of little rocks protruding out of the ground and I nearly did my ankle and I was careful. It is still worth visiting and doing. Next time we will make it to the tunnel.

This is one of the best walking tracks I have done. This track is an old railway track. Entire track about 15km altogether with the forty foot falls track. Make sure to wear hiking boots if it’s a rainy day because it will be full of mud. You could find the Nattai dam and the tunnel in the track. End of the track you will find the incline track which is difficulty level high. Forty foot falls track is also adventurous.
