Border loop lookout

About
Border loop lookout provides a bird's-eye view south down Gradys Creek, with the historic spiral loop about 400 metres below the lookout. Scenic views of Border Ranges National Park and McPherson Range can be seen to the east and west.
Border loop, also known as Spiral loop, was the first standard gauge railway linking two capital cities in Australia. At the time, it was a significant nation-building project. Construction of the line between Sydney and Brisbane began after World War I, when there was a need to create employment as well as prepare the country for future conflict.
Border loop lookout offers an easily accessible peek into this superb World Heritage national park, which you can explore further along its hiking tracks, or just relish the view. Enjoy a barbecue with friends and family in Border loop picnic area, and the trailhead for Border loop walk is also nearby.

Cant see much at the top. Im a train nerd. Going back down the hill you can see the loop tunnel entrance. Better view of trains from the beautiful Rainforest Gateway campground just down the road.

This has to be one of the best scenic drives I have done. Such a nice quiet picnic area with drop toilets, tables and fire pits. There is also a loop walk you can do which is about 1.5km and has an old massive fig tree. Nice to just sit relax and listen to nature whilst having a picnic. The history of the building of this loop is truly amazing. A special shout out goes to the Lions Club for the upkeep of this road. Please donate at the NSW/QLD border…….without our help we all wouldn’t be able to experience this spectacular drive.

I enjoyed the visit. Beautiful overlooking the valley. Seat and tables. Drop toilet. Take it easy over the Grids coming from the north. Cars and Motorcycles.

THANK YOU SO MUCH LIONS CLUB for keeping this brilliant road open to the public. Views are great but due to the intense tree coverage in this area you can only see small snippets of the railway loop. All these 3 x snippets are visible in my photo here. Why is this lookout even here anymore? You will not see any trains as they only traverse this at night. But a good stop all the same. Clean drop toilets too. The rangers do a great job. Thanks

Such a shame they have allowed the trees to obscure the railway line. When we were children, admittedly 50 years ago, you could see the train clearly on its way around the loop.
