Come and discover together! Because Australia is such an ancient continent, our plants have a long and fascinating history that has resulted in a unique and diverse flora. The Flora Australis walking tour will take us on a journey through deep time across our fascinating country as we discover the Gondwanan origins and evolution of our remarkable flora. Along our way we will discover how our plants have adapted to our soils, climates and of course fire. We begin at the Lilypad Bridge and pass through the Gondwana, Weird and Wonderful and Arid Gardens. As we walk along Eucalypt Walk on our way back to the Visitor Centre, we consider the First Nations peoples' knowledge and use of fire over 65,000 years. Orchid Conservation Tours

Orchid Conservation Tours

See the world's largest endangered orchid conservation program with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Orchid Conservation Program shade houses. Orchids are among the most beautiful and intriguing native wildflowers, with Victoria home to over 400 species, most of which grow nowhere else in the world. Sadly, however, half of the native orchid species are threatened with extinction in the wild. The Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria Orchid Conservation Program grows threatened orchids and plants them back out into the bush to create new wild populations and reduce their risk of extinction. Underpinning this work, the program undertakes cutting-edge scientific research on all aspects of orchid ecology, including on pollination, symbiotic fungi, propagation methods, and reintroduction science. They aim to prevent future orchid extinctions by storing a genetically diverse collection of seed and symbiotic fungi, growing suitable numbers of threatened orchids for reintroductions and reintroducing these species to protected public and private land, where the appropriate vegetation, climate and insect pollinators are present. Please note that the minimum age of attendees on this tour is 12 years old, and that the shade houses are not wheelchair-accessible.
