About

This six-day conservation tour visits Heron and Wilson Islands in the southern Great Barrier Reef, led by marine conservationist and CoralWatch Ambassador Susy James.

Three nights at Heron Island include CoralWatch reef monitoring using the Coral Health Chart, with data entered into a global database; guided turtle nesting walks for green turtles and loggerhead turtles, both listed as threatened nesting species; and a private tour of the University of Queensland Research Station, which has operated on the island since 1951.

Days 4 to 6 are spent on Wilson Island — two nights in glamping tents on a remote coral cay with no mobile reception or Wi-Fi. Wilson Island's turtles often nest in the morning; the 5:00am sunrise turtle walks and snorkel to the Wilson Bommie (a ~500-year-old coral formation 5m tall) are the highlights. A guided seabird walk covers the islands' breeding and migratory bird populations; up to 200,000 birds nest here at peak season.

Daintree Nature and Wildlife Safari

Daintree Nature and Wildlife Safari

Two of the world's most significant natural heritage areas meet in Far North Queensland. The Daintree Rainforest — ancient, continuous, and extraordinarily biodiverse — runs to the edge of the Great Barrier Reef, and the wildlife found here exists nowhere else on earth. This three-day journey explores the World Heritage Daintree Rainforest and the volcanic Atherton Tablelands, led by expert naturalist guides. On foot, by solar-powered boat and by vehicle, participants walk ancient rainforest trails, cruise the Daintree River at dawn and travel inland to highland forests and crater lakes formed 17,000 years ago. The focus throughout is close, unhurried wildlife observation, supported by access to private reserves and expert interpretation of tropical ecosystems. The Daintree is Australia's largest tropical rainforest remnant, covering 120,000 hectares. Its trails support southern cassowaries, Boyd's forest dragons and a dense assemblage of tropical birds. The Atherton Tablelands, rising inland from the coast, shelter the Lumholtz tree-kangaroo (Mapee in local Aboriginal language) in protected forest patches where they are regularly observed feeding in the canopy. Crater lakes, strangler figs, and an extraordinary diversity of nocturnal fauna complete the picture of a landscape shaped by volcanic history and millions of years of ecological continuity.

Manta Rays of Lady Elliot Island

Manta Rays of Lady Elliot Island

This five-day citizen science expedition takes guests to Lady Elliot Island — the southernmost coral cay of the Great Barrier Reef, 80 kilometres off the Queensland coast — to work alongside Project Manta researchers studying reef manta rays. Guests join three days of guided research with a trained scientist, including private boat charters to search for reef manta rays and sea turtles, photo-identification data collection, manta ray identification sessions, and participation in the Tag-free Turtle Project and Leaf to Reef research program. The expedition also includes a guided low-tide reef walk and the Night Explorer Tour — ghost crabs, roosting seabirds and stargazing on the island's airstrip. All four nights are at Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort, which runs entirely on solar power and rainwater collection. Snorkel equipment is provided. Lady Elliot Island is accessible only by small aircraft. No prior research or diving experience is required; a basic level of swimming confidence is needed for snorkelling activities.
