Dogs Fahren and Tawdiffu watch the truffle excavation

Truffle Hunt

After arrival take a leisurely stroll to Macenmist’s truffiere. Then meet their truffle dogs Fahren and Tawdiffu. You will be following one of the hounds in a search for the black diamonds, better known as Perigord black truffles. After smelling the aroma that permeates the soil they harvest the truffle in true archaeological style. From the frosty start they return to the cosy atmosphere of the truffle shed. Partake of a warm beverage while savouring delicate truffle samples. Watch how to clean and grade truffle and learn something of the mystic that surrounds them. At the tour conclusion Macenmist also encourages cellar door sales of its produce together with locally produced goods from the region.

Guests enjoying a truffle luncheon

Truffle Hunt Plus Luncheon

One of the best ways to discover the fascination of the black perigord truffle is to join a hunt followed by a three course truffle lunch. Begin to understand some of the mystic surrounding truffles as you trail truffle dog paws and watch them display their olfactory skills. Once the dogs discover truffle, the heady aroma of the soil indicates a buried treasure. You will then be able to partake in unearthing this black gem. After the hunt your taste buds are about to sample one of the world’s most sought after flavours. Your journey from “paddock to plate” commences. It’s now time to sit back, relax and enjoy a leisurely three course truffle luncheon in warm rural surrounds. The Macenmist Vineyard is still in its infancy so in 2017 you can Bring Your Own wine to enjoy with your lunch.

The hunting tour was fantastic. I enjoyed every single bit. Farm owner Barbara was a lovely lady, we learnt a lot about truffles on how they are grown and farmed. Watching Tawdiffu, the friendly clever Lagotto Romagnolos truffle dog in action was an amazing experience. 😍 There was a three course lunch followed by the truffle hunt. I was so looking forward to the paddock to plate experience but sadly it was a little let down. 🙁 I was told Black Perigord truffles are prized for their intense earthy taste but unfortunately I could not smell nor taste that in any of the food that was served to us. 😬 That pungent truffle aroma was nowhere to be found. I was hoping every dish was infused with the distinct and exquisite flavours of fresh truffle but I was quite disappointed. Presentation was also underwhelming, it was very much like a home cooked meal. 😐 Overall it was a great experience. 5⭐️ for the truffle hunt tour and 3⭐️ for the food. 😌
