The Heyfield Wetlands is a beautiful focal point for Heyfield and situated at the Wetlands overlooking a small lake is the Information Centre.
For the public's enjoyment, four kilometres of walkways with eight exercise stations and boardwalks have been built on the twenty eight hectare reserve. The Wetlands offers a place for people to enjoy walking, exercising, bird watching, fishing, photography and outdoor events. Sitting beside the Information Centre is a barbeque, shelter and wheelchair-friendly picnic table for general use.
The Information Centre is run by volunteers and can provide brochures, maps and booklets on what is available to see and do in the area. A lovely variety of local art and craft can also be purchased and at various times the centre is hired out for private functions with an electronic whiteboard available for use. Events hosted at the centre have included parties, weddings, funerals, conferences, meetings, craft groups, exhibitions and concerts. The Wetlands committee provides catering for functions on request. Please contact us for costing of hire and catering or pop in to say hello and have a look around.
This afternoon, I visited the Heyfield Wetlands located off Traralgon-Maffra Road and Davis Street in Heyfield. I've driven past here a couple of times and always wanted to check it out. Considering it's the AFL Grand Final public holiday, I figured it was a great opportunity to do that. This Wetlands Reserve which used to be a Racecourse was certainly much larger than I anticipated. There are several walks you can take which all join together in loops. There's also a viewing platform where you can see a couple of the swamps from higher up. It's generally an easy walk with flat gravel pathways and some short boardwalks and timber bridges. The vegetation is really beautiful and there's plenty of waterbirds to see along the way. I would recommend spending 1-2 hours to take it all in.
I love this place it was built buy the local a few years back and has really taken off and looks very natural. It has a great information centre for local attractions, picnic areas, bbq pretty well all you need for a great day out with the family. Make sure to walk the trails especially the look out. Lots of birds have moved overall worth a stop if in town.
Lovely serene spot. However, the Tourist Information Centre wasn't open on a Friday afternoon so couldn't use the public toilets in the building.
I would of gone past this place had I not stopped in to see the information center. It was closed but the surrounding wetlands where a hidden treasure. Amazing variety of bird life and insects. Got some great photos and a place I'll come again.
Great advice. Friendly volunteer at the centre. Loads of information. Amazing location next to reclaimed wetlands, by the locals over twenty years. So glad we stopped.
