An easy four kilometre return walk with plenty of spectacular views of the Victorian Alps Across to Melbourne and the Great Dividing Range from the Yarra Ranges National Park on offer. With sections that take you through snowgum woodland and stops along the way that look out north to the Alps and south to Marysville and Melbourne, it is a fantastic addition to any big day.
From the Lake Mountain Alpine Resort Village Car Park, follow the wide track as it climbs steeply for 200 metres before levelling out to a gentle incline to the summit. The track to Marysville lookout takes off to the west from just below the summit. From the summit, the walk heads east to the Alps Lookout. From here it passes through an alpine bog and over several granite rock faces covered with lichens and mosses to reach the junction with the Snowy Hill track. Sherlocks lookout is located 100 metres along the Snowy track. Returning to the junction, the walk continues to Taggerty Valley View and then to Gerraty's car park via the summit.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ If you’re looking for a refreshing nature escape not too far from Melbourne, the **Lake Mountain Summit Walk** is an absolute must-do! Located just around 2 hours from Melbourne, this hike is perfect for families, beginners, and anyone wanting a peaceful alpine experience. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow, with a gentle incline that leads you through stunning alpine landscapes, tall gum trees, and fresh mountain air that instantly resets your mood. The highlight is reaching the summit, where you’re rewarded with panoramic views across the Yarra Valley and surrounding ranges — especially magical during autumn 🍂 and winter when the scenery transforms. What I loved most is how accessible and safe the track is, making it ideal even if you’re hiking with kids. There are also picnic spots along the way, perfect for a relaxed break while soaking in the views. Whether you’re chasing snow in winter or a cool escape in summer, Lake Mountain Alpine Resort offers a beautiful mix of adventure and tranquillity. Highly recommend adding this to your weekend getaway list! #LakeMountain #MelbourneDayTrips #YarraValley #VictoriaHikes
In the warmer months, Lake Mountain is a wonderful place to hike. Beautiful views and wild flowers 😊. Just don’t go on hot to very warm days. Bring plenty of water and bugs spray. I highly recommend it. In winter, it’s also a great place to visit for skiing and tobogganing (But like all ski resort places, the fee to enter is very, very expensive 😠)
Beautiful, short and steep hike! We got up early for this one to try sneak in a sunrise, however don't expect to see the sun directly at the summit! It was 800m each way and the initial 200m or so is pretty steep and loose underfoot so be aware of that! It's a beautiful view into the ranges and out to Marysville! A sunset on this side would be amazing!
Our favorite place, well one of many. this time I was bit surprise that these annoying horse flies been absolutely everywhere, but we picked a perfect day. Amazing views, relaxing time, no visitors. We had an excellent time. BTW walk from the carpark is a short and easy. I think you have to combine that with walk on ski tracks to get your blood pumping.
I arrived around 9am and walked to the summit. A decent path led to spectacular picturesque views of the valley and Marysville. I was the only one there so it was serene. A very light falling of snow so and sun shining, perfection.
