Sovereign Hill is a living museum presenting the story of Ballarat as a gold rush boomtown. Gold was discovered here in 1851, triggering the greatest alluvial gold rush the world has ever known.
But this isn't the history lesson you got at school. Sovereign Hill puts you at the heart of the action.
Explore underground on a mine tour, cosplay as a gold rush character inside their 1850s photography studio, pan for gold on the diggings, hop onto a coach ride, see live rare trades demonstrations, try the iconic Raspberry Drops handcrafted only at Sovereign Hill, browse the shops, and meet some colourful costumed characters.

Great experience. Lots of demos and storytelling by "villagers". The blacksmith was fabulous and engaging especially with the kids. The street "con artist" was brilliant with his skills. The self touring trip into the mine was excellent as well. The shop and hotel staff in the village were so helpful and friendly. Brilliant day that was worth travelling 2.5 hrs to.

Sovereign Hill is such a fun and immersive place! I’ve visited several times with family and friends, and it never gets old. Walking through the recreated gold rush town feels like stepping back in time – the streets, the buildings, the people in period costume, it all makes the history come alive.
We love exploring the old shops, watching the craftsmen at work, and even trying our hand at panning for gold. It’s a perfect mix of learning and having fun, and there’s something for everyone – kids, adults, and even our dog loved being out in the open spaces while we wandered around. The little details really make it special, from the horse-drawn carts to the old-style cafés and the sound of the streets buzzing with activity.
There’s also a lot to see and do throughout the day – the evening sound-and-light show is amazing, and the museum exhibitions give even more depth to the history. Every visit leaves us with new things to notice and appreciate. It’s not just a theme park; it’s a place where history feels alive, and you can spend hours wandering, exploring, and just soaking it all in. Definitely one of our favourite places to visit in Victoria!

Great place for all ages. Staff are very friendly and super helpful. Enjoyed the gold pouring and boiled lollies demos immensely. Alot to see which is hard to pack it all into just one day. The sprinklers off the hotel was most welcomed being that it was a hot day. The only down side for the day was the huge line up in the morning to get in, even with prepaid tickets. Need a mobile ticket scanner.

We were pleasantly surprised by tge amount of things to do there, we spent around 4 hours wondering through looking at all the old style buildings. The wife thoroughly enjoyed her Devonshire tea and scones from the bakery and the kids loved paying for gold and of course the play ground.
Staff are friendly and knowledgeable overall a good afternoon outing for the family.

Don’t miss the 11am Trooper show! The performer is incredibly funny and interacts with the audience a lot, which made it so much fun. Kids could easily follow along, and we learned some interesting “history” about the mining police in a really engaging way. You’ll definitely enjoy it!
