Under the Surface is a curated public art project comprising of local and internationally renowned artists' works, located along the existing East Gippsland Rail Trail and extending through a selection of villages and townships of GunaiKurnai Country.
The project invited local artists Alice Pepper and Patricia Pittman, to be joined by visiting artists MEGGS, Ling and Minna Leunig - led by the story of the GunaiKurnai community.
Sites include: Nicholson Bridge. Patricia Pittman, Partelli's Crossing, Tostaree. Minna Leunig, Orbost Butter Factory LING , Nowa Nowa underpass. Alice Pepper X MEGGS
Each of the artists’ practice focuses on flora, fauna and natural environment and the works subsequently draw attention to the natural environment, assisting in visual storytelling and aiming to connect and grow human relationships with the land through art.
Through a cultural awareness program with GLaWAC and community, the visiting artists developed learnings on artistic practices, storytelling, introduction to the local environment and preservation. In turn, visiting artists shared their skills with locals, encouraging confidence in presenting works at a larger scale, with connection to story.
The Social Crew conducted onsite research, engaged key community members and groups, and collaborated with GLaWAC and the East Gippsland Rail Trail Committee to curate the project in order to better inform the travelling artists of their subject matter and the land on which they stand.

My husband and I met with Shawn to discuss a coverup of an old tattoo. Shawn drew up an amazing piece. He has already done the first session, and I could not be more impressed with his work. Shawn’s attention to detail and artistic style is absolutely amazing. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. We even purchased one of Shawn’s art pieces. He is truly a talented artist. I highly recommend anyone there. Great people!

Have been pierced by Jesse twice now and it's been great both times he is very quick and efficient always makes sure i'm ok after the piercing. Recently got both nipples pierced and it was extremely quick and very little pain. I recommend Jesse and will be coming here for my future piercings or tattoos, I also had my friend get pierced and she also enjoyed her service and results. Prices are also great he does great deals and for his services it's very worth it.

As a young Female Tattoo shop seem intimidating because of men, but I’ve never felt more comfortable and welcomed. Shawn has now helped me out two times And both times were an amazing experience. Biggest plus is he cares deeply about his work and make sure it’s right. 10 out of 10 recommend. Price is reasonable and so so so worth it. If you want it done right, this is the place to go.

My experience was awesome. Walking in, everyone at the shop was super warm and welcoming. The shop itself is comfortable and looks sick. My artist, Kainen, was quick with his set-up and made sure I was content with the size and placement. I requested a couple alterations that he had no problem doing. His art is dope and his prices extremely fair for the quality of his work. Go check em out!
