The scenic Stony Creek Trestle Bridge is just off the Princes Highway between Nowa Nowa and Lakes Entrance, four hours drive east of Melbourne.
At 276 metres long and 20 metres high, it is one of the largest standing bridges of its kind in Victoria.
This iconic and heritage-listed bridge was built in 1916 when the railway line from Melbourne to Bairnsdale was extended to Orbost.
Constructed using red ironbark and grey box timber, the bridge is a fine example of early engineering skills. It remained in regular service for over 60 years until it was damaged by bushfire in 1980, with the last train crossing in 1988.
Today, the Stony Creek Trestle Bridge is a popular stop along the East Gippsland Rail Trail, which stretches for almost 100km between Bairnsdale and Orbost. The bridge can be viewed from an elevated viewing platform or from the carpark at the base of the bridge where you will also find picnic tables and toilet facilities.
Visitors looking to extend their stay can enjoy a picnic or camp overnight at nearby Cosstick's Weir, hit the trails at Nowa Nowa mountain bike park, or grab refreshments or accommodation at the nearby towns of Nowa Nowa, Bruthen or Lakes Entrance.
Very impressive. Love checking out historic sites, had good information boards located on both sides of the bridge. The roads in are well maintained, just be aware that google maps gives the location a kilometre or so short of the bridge, but you can't miss it if you keep driving. The main carpark is at far end of bridge. We also spotted a koala in the tree at one end so that was a bonus.
Such a stunning and peaceful spot hidden in the forest! The old bridge looks amazing surrounded by tall trees and ferns — feels like a scene from a movie. The walk down is beautiful and not too hard, just make sure to wear good shoes. Totally worth the visit! 🌿
Road is good to get here along the old Nawa Nawa Rd - it's in good condition but apparently ota closed end of November for a couple of days. Bridge is quite the site: The Stony Creek Trestle Bridge was built in 1916 when the existing rail line from Melbourne to Bairnsdale was extended to This 97 kilometre extension hrough rugged terrain was reputed to have been the most difficult rail project aken in Victoria. The bridge remained in ervice for over 60 years up a bushfire damaged it in 1980. The last train crossed the bridge in 1988. At 247 metres long and 20 metres high, the bridge is the largest standing bridge of its kind in the state. Built of red ironbark and grey box timber, it is a fine example of the early engineering skills that madedo with the resources and materials found on site!
Ok so Google maps will send you to the wrong place. Just follow the dirt road all the way and you'll literally bump into the bridge. There is an upper or lower viewing area. Nice place for pics and just admire the view and area. Take a short walk around.
Fantastic example of a timber trestle bridge built in 1916. If you like things of old make a point to have a look and see the engineering that was done all by hand. Truly amazing.
