A must-do in Cairns! My Half-day late January trip to Green Island with Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruise was seamless. The crew was professional, the boat ride was smooth, and the schedule was spot on. We loved the semi-submersible tour, especially with the marine biologist’s expert commentary, and the glass-bottom boat offered incredible views of the reef. Whether you choose the self-guided island walks on half-day trip or the paid crocodile display and the Green Island Natural Park on a full-day tour, it’s a perfect way to experience the Great Barrier Reef .
Our Big Cat Green Island Tour ended up being a difficult experience. The boat ride took over 2 and a half hours, running about 1hr and 10 minutes longer than expected due to high tides, which prevented the captain from docking. Unfortunately, the rough conditions caused around 80% of passengers to become seasick, creating a pretty overwhelming atmosphere. As someone who has never been seasick before, it was genuinely traumatic — I avoided eating all day and took tablets to make the return trip bearable. Green Island itself was a tranquil beach and National Park with calm water suitable for beginner snorkelling, though overcrowding and stirred-up sand meant we didn’t see many fish. The Big Cat Green Island crew were helpful and supportive throughout, but overall I wouldn’t choose to do this tour again given the conditions we experienced.
Amazing place and all the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Couldn't ask for better experience on the reef. Marine biologist on board was very knowledgeable and answered all of the kids questions. Fantastic day.
Definitely a must do activity if you are in Cairns, especially semisubmarine ride, snorkeling along with cruise ride.
Absolute joke of an experience. We boarded the Cairns–Green Island boat in worsening weather that clearly should have been cancelled, but since everyone had already paid, they pushed on anyway. The captain even warned 15 minutes in that a severe storm was ahead and we might have to turn back — yet still chose to continue. The boat was tipping in heavy swell, people were vomiting, staff were sliding around, and safety felt completely ignored. We somehow reached Green Island, where the captain admitted it was one of the worst storms in 10 years and said pickup might not happen until hours later. Visibility was around 10m, rain sideways, reef activities impossible, and we were stranded for 3.5 hours with barely any shelter. A tree fell next to us, puncturing the awning we were hiding under down to the ground — total chaos. BigCat never returned at 12pm which was on the schedule they provided, and after countless unanswered calls we had to escape on a random boat from another company just to get back to Cairns. To top it off, staff initially refused to refund us and questioned why we were even asking, only giving it back after 40 minutes of arguing — at 3pm! After leaving our hotel at 6.30am, we didn’t get back until around 5pm, meaning the entire day was completely wasted. A refund doesn’t give back our wasted day or the reef experience we never had. The captain and team showed a serious lack of professionalism, poor decision-making, and reckless risk-taking that directly affected people’s safety and experience. It felt like profit mattered more than passengers. Very disappointed
