The region's rural heritage and unique granite is evident along the banks of this river which winds past the historic town of Moruya. For a 14 kilometre return trip launch into shallow water at North Head campground near the airport, or at the Moruya town boat ramp in Riverside Park, east of Moruya Bridge. Look out for mangrove forests along the way.
A short side trip at high-tide up Ryan's Creek, on the southern side of the river two kilometres east of Moruya Bridge, is worthwhile to see the mangroves and granite boulders in the water. Take the left fork at the junction.
Toilets are at North Head campground and both picnic tables and toilets are near the Moruya town boat ramp.
Really spectacular scenery even without a sighting of seals or whales. Worth a trip to see.
Lovely scene to experience in Moruya. We visited the headland during the day following large ocean swells. It was nice watching the waves break in over the headland during the Easter 2025 holiday period. The coastal drive into the Shelly beach area is vivid with natural coastal estuarine beauty, as you meander along the river towards the coast. Lots of great potential fishing areas or places to stop off for a moment, or an afternoon, along the way on the river from Moruya town centre to the south head.
If you enjoy a quiet but mesmerising, elevated lookout with a wide view towards the endless ocean horizon with parts of the coast far away visible to the left and right, this lookout is the right choice! The small cemetery in the center and the sitting table next to it makes the experience both more unique and more meaningful ⛰️🔭🐋🌟
Stop at lookout and then down to the beach for a dip or a walk. Beautiful and easy parking and walk
A great area to get a look at the coast and river inlet. We saw dolphins and a seal near the rocks and I expect you could see whales at the right time of year. Ample parking and great walking tracks are available around the headlands. Well worth the visit.
