Monuments For Fishes

These giant colourful sculptures bob and sway on the water in mesmerising ways. Sydney artist Mikala Dwyer was inspired by the small striped fishing floats in her studio and her Monuments For Fishes installation lives up to its name: the tallest of the five sculptures is 22.6 metres high (and the heaviest one weighs 16.1 tonnes). Their striking shapes might make you think of totems, minaret curves or tenpin bowling pins. The artist pays tribute to many local influences through this work: Barangaroo and the First Nations women who have a long history of fishing in these waters, as well as Kenneth Slessor's 'Five Bells' poem, which reflects on how his friend Joe Lynch died in Sydney Harbour. Monuments For Fishes sits near Pier Pavilion (a remarkable venue made from the recycled shells of 450,000 Sydney rock oysters), but can also be seen from Pyrmont, East Balmain and other harbourside locations.
