A vibrant place in the heart of the city, the Canberra Museum and Gallery celebrates the region's social history and visual arts with dynamic exhibitions and unique programs and events.
Canberra is a young city on an ancient continent. This place, selected to be Australia’s National Capital in 1909, has had a much older history but it is also one that continues to evolve to embrace new narratives of belonging and expressions of identity.
Journey through these changes in the new major exhibition drawn from Canberra Museum and Gallery’s collection Canberra Place and People. Find the stories of the people who have always been on this country and those who have come to make their lives here.
Told with objects of daily use and special significance, artworks and design of purposeful creativity and moving images made for screens large and small, Canberra’s story as the place where nationhood found a home is unlike no other.
Canberra Museum and Gallery is also the home of The Foundation Collection of Sir Sidney Nolan's paintings, donated by the artist to the people of Australia in 1974. The gallery manages the collection on behalf of the Australian Government.

My very first visit to the Museum was phenomenal and really breathtaking. I can’t believe those priceless paintings and artworks seeing in person. I visited twice during my three nights stay In Canberra.
If you are looking for a museum to visit while in Canberra, set aside that expectation, as this place is more of an art gallery. There are various interesting artworks by local painters relevant to the city's past and present. Admission is free, so there is no excuse not to pay a visit when you are in town.
The Canberra Museum & Gallery is a fantastic spot to learn about the history of the city. The exhibits give a clear timeline of how Canberra became the capital of Australia, which really helps you understand the city's unique story. A highlight for me was the section dedicated to Enrico Taglietti, the Italian architect. You can see models of his buildings around the city and learn the stories behind them. Upstairs, there’s a collection of works by Sidney Nolan that’s definitely worth checking out, especially if you're into Australian art. One of the more surprising exhibits is the Outer Space display, which takes you through space exploration, all based around the Mount Stromlo Observatory. It’s both fun and informative, and there’s even a cool arcade game at the end—like a little bonus after the exhibit!
We to view Photographs of Men in Love 1850s–1950s. Looking forward to some history, and or more than a few photos with no information at all. Not even how or where they were discovered So if you want boring go see few b&w photos with nothing. Did how ever enjoy the other gallerys
Serious question… where on earth do they expect someone to park to get access?? How are mobility impaired people meant to get there? This ongoing road work is highly frustrating for anyone wanting to adventure locally. I’d love to talk about the great exhibits however I don’t see how they expect people to visit when there isn’t any appropriate parking.
