A good place to spend a day out with family and friends. Entry is free and there are ample paid parking spots in front. The area has wide open views of the surroundings with plenty of elevated platforms and lookout points. There are many spots to enjoy a picnic and on the day we visited there were plenty of people relaxing outdoors. There is also a play area for kids. Walking paths run throughout the grounds and the property features a range of rare and unique trees. The main building has a cafe if you want to grab something to eat or drink and large glass windows overlooking the landscape. There is also a souvenir shop if you want to pick up a keepsake. For me, the highlight is the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection, featuring a remarkable variety of well maintained bonsai, each with its own history and story. We could not cover most of the area because of time constraints, so there is definitely more to explore on a longer visit. Overall, a nice place to visit, relax, and enjoy the views and lush greenery.

From the sweeping landscapes to the vibrant autumn colours, it's the perfect spot to slow down, take a walk, or simply enjoy the view. I was fortunate to catch a dramatic sunset with moody skies, making the scenery even more spectacular. Whether you're a nature lover, photographer, or just looking for a peaceful escape, this is a destination that's well worth visiting. Highly recommended.
I recently visited the National Arboretum Canberra and had a fantastic experience. The grounds are beautifully maintained, with an incredible collection of trees from around the world and stunning views across Canberra. It’s a peaceful place to relax, go for a walk, or simply enjoy nature. The walking trails are well designed and suitable for visitors of all ages. The lookout points provide breathtaking panoramic views, especially on a clear day. The visitor centre is informative and welcoming, with helpful staff who are happy to answer questions about the Arboretum’s history and collections. One of the highlights was exploring the different forests and learning about the unique tree species. The area is clean, spacious, and perfect for families, photographers, and anyone looking to escape the busy city atmosphere. There are also great picnic spots and plenty of open space to enjoy. Overall, the National Arboretum Canberra is a must-visit destination. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, it’s a wonderful place to spend a few hours surrounded by beautiful scenery and nature. Highly recommended!
The National Arboretum is easily one of the most impressive spots in Canberra. Whether you are a local or just visiting, the panoramic views across the lake and the city from the Village Centre are worth the trip alone. The architecture is stunning, and it serves as a perfect hub before you head out to explore the forests. • National Bonsai and Penjing Collection: Do not skip this. The level of detail and care in these miniature trees is incredible, and it is a very peaceful walk through the gallery. • POD Playground: If you have kids, this is a winner. The acorn-shaped cubbies are so creative and unlike any other playground we have visited. It kept the little ones busy while we grabbed a coffee and took in the scenery. • Walking Trails: There are over 20 kilometers of tracks. We did a short walk through the Himalayan Cedars, which was beautiful and very well-maintained. • The Curatoreum: The gift shop in the main building has a fantastic range of unique, botanically themed items that are actually worth buying. It is a great place to spend a few hours or a whole day. Just a heads up, it can get quite windy on the hill, so bring a jacket even if it looks sunny! Note: Parking is paid per hour at site.
The National Arboretum in Canberra is absolutely stunning — such a peaceful and expansive place to explore. The views are incredible, with so much open space to wander and take it all in. It’s the kind of place where you could easily spend hours, and in hindsight, I wish we had packed a picnic to really make the most of it. One of the highlights was the bonsai collection, with some trees that are hundreds of years old — truly fascinating and beautifully presented. There were plenty of visitors when we went, and the café inside was buzzing, adding to the lively but still relaxed atmosphere. We were also lucky enough to catch the cherry blossoms in full bloom, which made it even more special. It’s the perfect spot to bring a picnic, relax, and even just sit back and watch the kite flyers drifting across the sky. A must-visit if you’re in Canberra.
