Explore the ancient landscapes of Finke Gorge National Park, 140 kilometres west of Alice Springs. Walk into valleys of rare plants or follow a popular four-wheel drive route.
The 46,000 hectare park protects the desert oasis Palm Valley, home to a diverse range of rare and unique plant species. Those plants include the Red Cabbage Palm, which is only found here - botanic remnants from millions of years ago, when Central Australia was lush with tropical forests.
The Finke River is claimed to be one of the oldest in the world, with areas dating back 350 million years. For experienced four-wheel drivers, the popular Finke drive route is an adventurous drive down the Finke River to Illamurta Springs Conservation Reserve and Watarrka National Park.
The park and nearby areas are significant to the Western Arrernte Aboriginal people and there is also evidence of early European settlement.
Follow one of the marked walking trails short distances to survey the area from lookouts, or to find out more about the mythology of the Western Arrernte Aboriginal culture. Pitch a tent in the campground - toilets, showers and gas barbecues are provided. Camping fees apply and campsites must be booked online before you arrive.

Finke Gorge National Park is a stunning inland national park featuring dramatic red sandstone gorges, ancient landscapes, and untouched natural scenery. The contrast between the lush palm oasis and the surrounding arid desert creates a striking and unique environment, making it a great destination for adventure seekers and nature photographers. However, the park is quite remote, and some access roads can be rough, requiring a suitable vehicle and proper preparation. Weather conditions can also be extremely hot, which may make exploration physically demanding. Overall, it is a raw and beautiful natural attraction that is well worth visiting despite the challenging access.

Beautiful park to visit and stay in. We started on the Boggy Hole track then went across to Palm Valley - be aware that the track following the Finke River between Boggy Hole and Palm Valley is authorised access only, so had to backtrack to the main road. Barely a soul in site in the eastern and southern sides of the park, and no light pollution for epic starscapes! ig: adventure__unlimited yt: adventureunlimited

We spent 4 days in this beautiful park doing Palm Valley and The Boggy Hole track. Both parts are 4WD only and the BHT became one of our favourite tracks in Australia. It’s very remote, but well maintained, thanks to the rangers. So make sure you have a map and compass or an offline map (we used Maps me) as there’s absolutely no reception and nearly no other vehicles (depending on the season). Make sure you have some recovery gear ( as a minimum we’d recommend a compressor, tyre repair kit, shovel, but would also be good to have recovery boards and make sure to let your tyres down). Keep in mind that the track can change a little bit every year. So follow the pink tapes if you see them. When we drove the BHT, the water crossing part was no problem without a snorkel. Depending on the conditions of the track it can be an easy but also difficult track. The best is to check with the visitor centre or even better with the rangers before you go. You can do the whole track (100kms) in about 8 hours or you take your time , prepare some picnic gear and enjoy the beautiful nature. All in all it was a fantastic experience and as mentioned at the beginning it became one of our favourite 4WD tracks in Australia.

Very tough track, but it's worth it. Did it on October 2022. Only saw one car going north beginning of our route from north to south. Make sure you have enough water, spare tire and tools, and satellite phone. There will not be reception and, most likely, no other people if something happens. We got a flat tire when a wooden branch sliced our left front tire middle of the way. Changing the tire was a little challenge due to heat and other problems with the tools we had. It's definitely one of the adventures I will remember my whole life.
